Cut Out + Keep

Cyanotyping On Fabric

This is a similar experience in developing film in a dark room without all the hassle of using extreme chemicals and such, and at a lesser cost.

Description

It fun project was sent to my courtesy of Cat and Jacquard, which my hubby end up taking over haha he had a blast.

Instructions

  1. Small 109093 2f2015 05 28 220317 p5260558

*Note every set, whether you get this one or not has their own instructions, I on the other hand did something a little different.* Get your two bottles of sensitizer, fill them up with water and shake really good making sure the contents of the bottle get dissolved. When adding water make sure it is in subdue lighting. Let set for at least 24 hours.

  2. Small 109093 2f2015 05 28 223233 p5270559

Print out the image you want on your project onto transparency paper. Make sure its on the textured side if not the ink will never dry. (hubby learned the hard way) Handle with care and let dry for about 5 minutes.

  3. Small 109093 2f2015 05 28 224916 p5270578

Once the sensitizers are set, mix equal part in a container to make your solution. Do this is subdue lighting as well. With a brush make sure you get a good saturation all over the area you want the image to be transferred. Use gloves while doing this step( hubby didn't and got blue hands) Once your fabric is coated with solution let dry in a dim or dark room.

  4. Small 109093 2f2015 05 28 225155 p5280579

Make sure they are dry. If they are, get your set up ready. Grab your image and your piece of glass. I used one from a picture frame. You can use that or something heavier so that your image doesn't move and you don't have unwanted shadows because remember as soon as you get direct sun or UV light the solution goes to work and start processing. We decided to do two shirts and a onesie for our son. I put the glass over my image and clipped my shirt onto cardboard so it wouldn't move; hubby did not, (he broke his glass in a trial run) so he had to hold it the whole time it was processing in the sun. He did 5 minutes for his shirt and 7 minutes for the onesie and I did 15 minutes for mine ( over processed not good).

Now that your time is up, take off your image, clips etc. And give it a good rinse. No soap or anything just plain cold water so the excess comes off, rinse till water runs clear.

Let dry when the water runs clear. This type of project can't get washed in washing machines nor get dry in dryer ... its recommended to take to dry cleaners. And enjoy!
