So you want to learn to crochet? Saw some cool pattern that ISN'T KNITTING?!? First tell me or show me this pattern because I mostly find knitting patterns =/ Then follow along to understand that said pattern. This will be the main 4 crochet types with the bounes of increases and decreaces.

Instructions

  1. First step is making the loop in the yarn for your hook. Holding the yarn in your left hand between your thumb and ring finger stretch the yarn with your middle and index fingers. Then loop the yarn around your right-hand thumb and index finger. After grab the top part of the yarn (coming from the ball) and pull that through your loop. You now have a slipknot put your hook in that.

  2. Small 121 0660 1284084356

Next step is holding the yarn; holding the hook with your thumb on the loop wrap it around your pinky and up to your index finger. When you need more yarn move your pinky or your arms up. You'll hold your working piece between your thumb and index finger.

  3. Small 121 0661 1284083673

You have a loop on your hook and holding the yarn, Horay. That is basicly how you start every crochet thing. Now Yarning Over (yo/yoh/woh/wo on patterns, mostly yo) Just grab the yarn with the hook and pull throw the loop already on your hook. You have now made 1 chain. Make this chain 5 or 10 long to have something to work with.

  4. Small 121 0663 1284084985

Now this chain is not crocheting, just a base to crochet into. A note here if you want to make, lets say a 10x10 square. You crochet an extra 11th chain at the end becuase the last chain gets used on the edge when you Turn a piece. Turning is really turning the piece around so you are crocheting right to left.

  5. Small 121 0619 1284085741

So far; holding the yarn, have made a chain and turned your piece. To make a Single Crochet (sc) first you will put your hook through the second chain ( second stitch from hook) from your hook. There should be 3 loops on your hook so far. Yarn over and pull this through 2 loops on the hook. (2 loops left) Yarn over again and pull through the 2 loops. There will be 1 loop left. This is a Single Crochet. Crochet the rest of your chain in Single Crochet(sc). Chain 1 (ch 1) and turn when finished.

  6. Small 121 0628 1284086763

You should notice the top of your work has an arrow like pattern now for the begining you'll always grab both the front and back on your hook when crocheting. If you only grab just front or the back it will make a ribbing like effect in your final piece.

  7. Small 121 0638 1284138158

Now Double Crochet (dc), this is taller and leaves a bit of space between stitchs. To do this; Yarn over, insert hook in stich (4 loops) Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops) Yarn over and pull through 2 loops(2 left) Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, now with 1 loop on your hook you can start the next Double crochet, finish the row like this. Chain 1 and Turn.

  8. Small 121 0671 1284138406

So there is this thing call half double crochet(hdc). You start like a normal double corchet. Yarn Over, insert in stitch, Yarn over and pull through stitch. This brings you to the point of having 3 loops on your hook. Instead of Yarning Over 2 more times to finish it as a double, Yarn Over once and pull through ALL 3 loops.

  9. Small 121 0643 1284138841

The last stitch I'll show you is Treble Crochet or Triple Crochet (tr). Yarn over 2 times, instert hook, Yarn Over and pull through. (4 loops left) Yarn Over pull through 2 loops (3 loops left) Yarn Over pull through 2 more loops (2 loops left) Yarn over a final time for the last 2 loops and this is a Triple Crochet.

  10. Increases (inc on patterns) is really just putting two crochet in the same stitch. So you make a Single Crochet and instead of moving to the next stitch to the left, just crochet another Single Crochet in the same stitch. This can be done with any style of stitch, and it can be used to make special stitches for a pattern.

  11. Small 121 0648 1284139358

Decreases (dec on patterns) taking away a stitch. To do this with Single Crochet. Inserts hook Yarn Over and pull through. Do nothing with the 2 loops on your hook. Now inserts in the next stitch Yarn Over and pull through. With the three stitches on the hook Yarn Over and pull through all three on the hook.

  12. So as a recap and just some things you may find on patterns. Sc = Single Crochet Ch = Chain (used in the base and to keep spaces) Sk = skip, the pattern should tell you which/how many stitches to skip Dc = Double Crochet Tr = Triple Crochet Hdc = Half-Double Crochet Inc = Increase, 2 crocheted in 1 stitch Dec = Decrease, crocheting 2 into 1 I hope this helps and you've now gain the ablilty to crochet.
