About

A level textiles piece, inspired by Alexander McQueen

these times are a rough estimate:
*1 hour to pin, cut and sew the corset
*1 hour to cut, dye and dry the wings (you will not be able to melt the organza if any of the wings are damp)
*30-60 miniutes to free hand sew, and heat the organza on the wings
*30 minutes to assemble the wings onto the corset and hand sew the bottom up

THIS TUTORIAL DOES NOT SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE A CORSET

Not me in the picture, the girl whos modeling the corset for me in the fashion show

You Will Need (7 things)

  • Sewing Machine with free hand foot
  • Vilene (wings)
  • Black Lace material(corset)
  • Metre Of Cotton Fabric(for the corset)
  • black Organza (wings)
  • Black Thread for the sewing machine
  • Heat Gun or a candle and a steady hand

Steps (11 steps, 210 minutes)

  1. 1

I printed out a picture of the butterfly then enlarged it, cut the wings out.

  2. 2

I then drew around them onto vilene

  3. 3

dye the wings in the colour of your choice, mine is orange but i added a splash of red.

  4. 4

As i didn't have the fabric i needed to finish the wings or the corset I played around this some scraps of fabric.

*The top one is an unknown synthetic fabric, the thiner parts melted nicely under the heatgun
*The middle is nappyliner painted with acrylic, which is very good at melting
*And the botton one is a synthetic satin, it did not melt at all under the heat gun

  5. 5

Using the wings as templates, facing down, cut two layers of organza for each wing.

  6. 6

sew an out line with the free hand machine, make it quite thick when you heatgun it it can melt if you use sinthetic or coated thread.
For the top bit, my butterfly is black with small patched of colour. So i used a free hand machine to make swirls.

  7. 7

use a heat gun to remove some of the organza. I used a metal knitting needle to stop the wings from moving.

the bottom wings are the wrong way around... :L

  8. 8

decide how your going to attach the wings,if your using a zip mabey think about having a wing on either side.

  9. 9

to cover up the edges of the wings i'm making a body. The underside is another piece of vilene, dyed brown. The top part is a peice of vilene that has been embelished with marino wool, organza and felt...but this is not an essencial step there are tons of ways to make it look nice.

  10. 10

I'm using hook and eyes to fasten my corset together. First i sewed one side of the corset to the underside of the body

  11. 11

i tryed sewing the top part of the body and wings together but the needle snaped, twice!
so i just used a glue gun, if you have a strong needle i suggest trying that first.

when the wings were on we knoticed they floped over a bit, so i added wire and tacked them to the corset.
