Corset From Old Jeans

Refashion, yay!

About

I had this dream of making a blue dress from old neckties but I am really bad at making the 'body' of a dress. So I came up with this blue corset. Going to wear it on top of every costume with not-so-good middle part.
When I finally finish the dress I'll upload that one too.

You Will Need (6 things)

  • Old Jeans
  • Sewing Equipment
  • 1 An Old T Shirt
  • Plastic (from juice bottle or paper binding folder or whatever you find)
  • 1 Sewing Machine
  • 16 Grommets

Steps (12 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

    Measure.
You'll need to find three circumferences - 1st around your ribcage, 2nd around the narrowest part of your belly, 3rd around hips or lower belly. Also find out how far these measures are from each other vertically.
This is the drawing I made. You can of course take more measures.

  2. 2

Divide your measures into seven (or more. or less.) parts (use a calculator) and draw the pieces on paper. Give every piece a name so that they don't get mixed up. Make the end parts with one side straight.

  3. 3

Cut out the pieces and write their names on them.

  4. 4

Arrange. This is where the names are useful.

  5. 5

    Pin.

  6. 6

    Sew.

  7. 7

Find some plastic. This can be a bottle or a box whatever you find that is stiff enough but can be cut with scissors.
I used an old school folder. Two ribs 1 cm wide for each seam. 6x2 in my case.
(Later I had to make two more for the ends and probably have to remake them cause they were too narrow and bendy and the corset tends to wrinkle around the laces.)

  8. 8

Keeping in mind the ribs' width make tunnels for them. These blue stips are from an old T-shirt.

  9. 9

Sew the top edge of your corset and then push the ribs from the bottom end inside their tunnels.

  10. 10

Mark along the edge the places for holes. These should be quite close to each other to make it look awesome and stop the corset from going wrinkly.
Installing the grommets is actually very simple (just need a hammer and patient neighbours. And grommets from probably any handicraft store).

  11. 11

At this point my sewing machine went on strike and I fastened the bottom ends of the tunnels by hand.

  12. 12

Use two laces and tie in the middle.
