Stop using canned beans! Cook beans like a Mexican!
This is how my Grandma taught me to make pinto beans with a few minor adjustments. My way is healthier, and VEGAN! :) Yah for Vegan!

You Will Need

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 1
    Step 1

    Gather supplies
    *Dried pinto beans
    *Onion
    *Garlic clove
    *Bay leaf
    *Seasonings
    *CROCKPOT

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 2
    Step 2

First step is to separate the bad beans from the good. It should be easy to spot the bad ones. The little pile is bad, as you see there is even some corn in there. :)

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 3
    Step 3

Leave the split beans in, these are not bad. According to my Grandma they "give flavor to the juice"

Fill your pot 1/2 of the way

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 4
    Step 4

Rather than soak the beans overnight I like to give them a "rub-down" in the crockpot.
Just fill the pot with water lightly scrub the beans together to get rid of dirt, drain, rinse, and fill the pot for real.
The drained water should be a light brown/grey

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 5
    Step 5

Fill your crockpot and add the rest on your ingredients! Now stir!
I like to dice my onion medium size.
I add the following to my beans
    *Salt & pepper
    *Bay leaf
    *Season salt
    *Dash of chili
*Clove of garlic (Today I was out)

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 6
    Step 6

Once all of your seasonings are added put the lid on your crockpot, turn it on high and wait about an hour.

Check your beans periodically! Make sure they have enough WATER, if needed add more.

First time you make beans fill your pot 1/2 full of beans and the rest with water.

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 7
    Step 7

Your beans will be soft and yummy once they are done!

Fresh beans are super yummy with a little cheese sprinkled on top and a fresh tortilla.

  • How to cook beans. Cook Pinto Beans - Step 8
    Step 8

Or you can make REFRIED beans! Make burritos, taco's, tostadas, bean-dip, ect..

*traditionally fried with bacon fat (ewww) vegetable oil works just fine.

Cooking beans was something I have been doing since I was little, I used to sort when I was 4...I never realized how unusual cooking beans from scratch is. Good Luck! Love to see your version let me know how they taste! If you want to know how to make bacon fat I can let you know.
