The second outfit I made for Project Paperdoll is a three-for-one special and is inspired by Cut Out + Keep's crafty superhero, Crafterella with a comic strip skirt, fan girl top and costume style kitchen apron!
The first pattern is a comic-print tiered hem skirt which gives the effect of comic strips layered on top of each other. The skirt is lined with white cotton and gathers at an elastic waistband, making it super comfy to wear out and about. The print comes in a repeating pattern of Crafterella action shots with a colourful yet subtle halftone background and Pow! and Bang! action bubbles for added impact. It's printed on 4-ounce cotton and available to buy now from from Fabric On Demand.
Please note: this pattern includes a 5/8" seam allowance. Cut a length of elastic to the size of your waist and then cut your fabric pieces. Cut two skirt pieces from the comic strip fabric and two skirt pieces from the lining fabric. Cut two of the larger tier pieces and two of the smaller tier pieces from comic strip fabric.
Fold the bottom edges of all the comic strip pieces up by 5/8", press and then fold over by another 5/8", pinning in place. Sew along these edges with your sewing machine, removing the pins as you go.
Line the top edges of the small tiers up with the bottom edges of the lining skirt pieces.
Place the larger tier on top lining the top edge up with the other edges and sew along the top edge.
Turn over and your tiers should be sitting neatly at the bottom of the lining skirt.
Sew the elastic together at the ends to create a loop for the waistband.
Sew two lines of basting stitches, one at 1/2" and one at 3/4" from the top of both the skirt pieces and both of the lining skirt pieces.
Pull the basting stitches on all of the pieces to gather the skirt pieces to the width of the elastic waistband.
Place the two skirt pieces on top of each other, so that the wrong sides are facing out and sew along either edge.
Place the two lining skirts on top of each other so that the wrong sides are facing out and sew along either side of just the tiers at the bottom.
Turn the lining skirt inside out, so that the right sides are facing out and sew along either side of just the lining skirt this time.
Slip the skirt over the lining skirt and line up along the top edges. Place the elastic waistband around the top edge of the skirt and stretch the elastic to match the size. Pin the elastic around the skirt and sew in place with black thread while stretching the elastic as you sew.
Remove the basting stitches and finish off the seams.
