Classic Scarf

A simple twist turns the basic scarf vintage.

About

I originally made this scarf for my friend Claire who's leaving soon for college in Canada (where it's really really cold). She likes girly things, even though she's a ska girl through and through, and I thought a pink scarf can't go wrong.

You Will Need (11 things)

  • 1 ½ skein Basic Yarn (I used Red Heart Collage)
  • 1 skein Different Shade of Yarn (I used Impeccable)
  • 1 Button(s) (Whatever you like to fit the flower's color)
  • 1 Yarn Needle
  • Iron
  • Ironing Board
  • Linen Cloth
  • Knitting Needles
  • Crochet Hook
  • Needle & Thread
  • 1 Optional Big Safety Pins

Steps (4 steps, 540 minutes)

  1. 1

The Scarf: Cast on 40 stitches using long-tail method with main yarn.
    1st and 3rd rows: Purl (p)
    2nd row: Knit (k)
    4th and every even row: k2, p36, k2
    5th and every odd row: p2, k36, p2
Work in this way till scarf reaches about 5 feet and end with three rows of p on right side and k on wrong side.

The Border: Single Crochet around scarf edge twice.

    The Flower:

To make small inside flower: ch2 and sc10 in first loop, join with slip stitch. Inc by 5 on next round (2 sc in one loop then sc in 2 loops, repeat around circle) and slip stitch into beginning chain. Ch1 *Sc in next loop, ch2, sk1 sc, sc in next loop* and repeat from * to * till there are 5 little gaps around the circle. Ch1, *sc in sc, 1 sc in first nest gap area 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2hdc, and 1 sc* and repeat from * to *. Fasten off and weave in. This is 4 rounds.

To make large outside flower: ch2 and sc 5 in first loop, join with slip stitch. Inc by 10 by 2 sc in each loop. Inc by 5 using above method. Inc by 5 again. You should now have 4 rounds done. Ch1, *sc in sc, ch2, sk 2 sc* and repeat from * to *. Ch 1, *sc in sc, 1 sc in gap area, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc* and repeat from * to * for the whole round. This is 6 rounds.

Next, sew small flower to the top of large flower. You can arrange the two however you like. Finally, sew button to the center of the small flower. I also tied braided yarn to the back as a makeshift friendship bracelet. To attach the flower to the scarf I just used a safety pin, that way she can take it off if she doesn't like it or if she want to pin it in her hair). But it is possible to just sew it on (I think the safety pin, if it's big enough, adds good support).

    Finally: Block scarf and wear.
