Making the Pocket The Cat Treasure Keeper Front, Back, Tummy Pocket, Cheeks, Nose, and Tail patterns are in the attachments. Trace all the patterns onto felt. Cut out these 4 pieces, plus the cheeks and nose. Arrange the buttons, nose, cheeks, and tummy pocket on the front of the cat (the front piece is the piece without ears).
Sew on the button eyes. For help, read Sewing On Sequins and Buttons. The nose and cheeks can be sewn on together. Put the nose at the top of the cheeks. Sew them both onto the front using 1 running stitch (“dolphin”) through the nose.
This cat needs whiskers! Tie a knot at the end of your thread or perle cotton about 2 ̋ from the thread ends. These ends will be the whiskers. Decide where you want whiskers on the cheeks. Put your needle through the cheek and cat front. The knot should show on the front. Pull the needle back up through where you want the next whisker to be. Tie a knot close to the felt. (You may want to ask an adult to help you.) Be sure the face lies flat when you set it down. (If you pull the thread too tight, the felt will bunch up.) Trim the thread, leaving a 2 ̋ tail. Now you have 2 whiskers.
Sew on the rest of the whiskers in the same way. You can have as many whiskers as you like. Try to have the same number of whiskers on each cheek. Trim the thread so all the whiskers are about the same size.
Use the running stitch (“dolphin”) to sew the pocket onto the cat’s front. Be sure not to sew across the top of the pocket!
Sew the tail onto the back of the cat (the back is the piece with ears). You can pin the tail in place with a safety pin if it keeps moving as you sew. Stay still, kitty tail! Use the running stitch (“dolphin”) to sew around the edge of the tail.
Place the front cat piece on 5. Use the running stitch (“dolphin”) to sew the pocket onto the cat’s front. Be sure not to sew across the top of the pocket! the back. Be sure the tail and face are on the outside. Pin them all together with a safety pin so they stay in place. Start sewing around the edge using the running stitch (“dolphin”). Don’t sew all the way around. Leave a gap so you can put in stuffing. Remove the safety pin. Add stuffing until your cat feels nice and fat. Then sew it shut. Tie a knot and hide the ends. Purrrrrrr!
