Description

Keep your sewing machine dust free while looking as cute as could be with cat ears and pockets for all of your tools, patterns and supplies.

Instructions

  1. Small 110281 2f2015 08 05 055944 img 1813

Start by measuring your sewing machine from the back to the front.

  2. Small 110281 2f2015 08 05 060023 img 1814

Cut out a piece of fabric large enough to cover your machine from front to back with an 1" excess on every side.

  3. Small 110281 2f2015 08 05 060028 img 1815

Fold the edges over by 1/2" and then fold over by another 1/2" and pin.

  4. Small 110281 2f2015 08 05 060034 img 1816

Now measure the sides of your sewing machine and cut two rectangles of fabric to the same width and height with an extra 1" excess on every side and place to the side.

  5. Small 110281 2f2015 08 05 060051 img 1817

I really wanted to add a pocket for my craft idea book on the front of my sewing machine, so I used my satchel for inspiration.

  6. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121242 img 1818

Cut out templates for the pocket. You need a rectangle as large as your book with an extra 1/2" around every side. A matching rectangle with rounded corners at the bottom and two little buckle shapes.

  7. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121253 img 1819

Pin your templates to your fabric.

  8. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121308 img 1820

Cut out two of the rectangles for the pouch, two of the rounded rectangles for the flap and four buckles.

  9. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121613 img 1821

Pin the buckles on top of each other, wrong sides facing out. Sew around the outside edges, leaving the top edge unstitched. Fold inside out and then sew up the top edge. Repeat for the other buckle.

  10. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121626 img 1822

Measure around the sides and bottom of the pouch and cut a rectangle long enough to fit and as wide as your book plus your regular seam allowance.

  11. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121804 img 1825

Place the two rounded for the flap on top of each other, wrong sides facing out, sew around the edge leaving a gap. Fold inside out and sew the open edge closed.

  12. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121637 img 1823

Sew the two rectangles for the pocket together around the outline, with the wrong sides of the fabric facing up but leave a small opening. Turn inside out and stitch closed the opening. Fold the long rectangle of fabric in half lengthways and then fold either side in half, so that the raw edges meet in the middle. Sew along the bottom edge and then fold in either edge at the sides and sew neatly.

  13. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121742 img 1824

Using your book to get the size just right, pin the long strip along the sides and bottom of the rectangle and sew in place.

  14. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 122119 img 1826

Pin the buckles on to the bottom of the flap.

  15. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 131654 img 1827

    Sew the buckles in place.

  16. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 121225 img 1842

Pin in place on the underside of the flap.

  17. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 131745 img 1843

Work out where you want your pocket positioned on the front of your sewing machine cover.

  18. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 131752 img 1844

    Sew the flap in place.

  19. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 131800 img 1845

Place the pouch underneath and pin in place.

  20. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 131809 img 1846

Sew the pouch around the edges.

  21. Small 110281 2f2015 08 06 131825 img 1849

Test out your new pouch with your idea book.

  22. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171756 img 1864

I like to keep my sewing patterns in A4 envelopes and I wanted to add a pouch for the pattern I was working on at the back of my cover. Cut a rectangle of fabric to the same width as your cover but a little shorter and pin over all of the edges. Sew along the top edge.

  23. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171910 img 1865

Pin the pocket to the bottom of your cover and sew in place.

  24. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 170927 img 1850

Position your cover back over your sewing machine and work out the width of your side panels, marking them with a pin.

  25. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 170932 img 1851

Lay one side of your sewing machine cover down and place all the tools you'd like to keep in place, cutting lengths of fabric for each pocket.

  26. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171022 img 1852

Starting with the back pocket, fold over the edge by 1/2", then by another 1/2" and sew. Pin at the sides.

  27. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171056 img 1853

Continue adding all the pockets and then fold under the bottom edges and pin along the bottom.

  28. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171129 img 1854

Check that everything fits nicely and then place your sewing supplies to the side.

  29. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171205 img 1856

Now starting with the shallowest bottom pocket, fold under either edge, pin in place.

  30. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171306 img 1857

Sew along the bottom and any vertical pockets you want to add.

  31. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171332 img 1858

Continue working your way up the pockets, fold under either side to match the backing piece and pin in place.

  32. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171415 img 1859

Once you've pinned up all the pocket, sew along either edge, removing the pins as you go.

  33. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171446 img 1860

Pin the finished side panel in place on the side of the cover, along the lines you previous sewed on the outside edge sof the outer cover, so that they create a little flap which hides the pocket underneath.

  34. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171459 img 1861

    Sew along the sides.

  35. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 171704 img 1862

Neaten up the top edge, pin and sew shut.

  36. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172019 img 1873

Remove your finished cover from your machine, pop up the sewing machine's handle and place your cover back on.

  37. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172049 img 1874

Cut a slit at the top of your cover, where the handle touches and then neatly pin under the edges, creating a hole big enough for the handle to slip through.

  38. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172132 img 1875

Sew around the edges of the hole.

  39. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172003 img 1867

Finally, cut a couple of foam ears to embellish the top of your cover. It's best to use white foam but I only had green. Place the foam ears on top of your fabric and cut four fabric ears with a little seam allowance around the edges.

  40. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172241 img 1868

With two ears on top of each other, wrong sides facing out and the foam in the middle for a template, s around the top top edges.

  41. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172334 img 1869

Fold the ear inside out and place over the foam.

  42. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172354 img 1870

Stitch an inner ear along the top edge of the ear, through the foam.

  43. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172417 img 1871

Fold under the bottom edge of the ear, pin in place and cut off any excess foam. Repeat to make the other ear.

  44. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172446 img 1878

Hand stitch the two ears at either side of your cover, bending them a little to give them a 3D shape.

  45. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172549 img 1896

Finally, sew two velcro dots under the flaps of your front pocket and then sew two cute buttons to the front.

  46. Small 110281 2f2015 08 26 172515 img 1900

Pop your idea book in it's pouch, any patterns you're working on in the back pocket. Pop your tools in their pockets and you're all ready to sew at a moment's notice!
