This is a great project to practice working on cables and working in the round and create a hat in the process. Using larger needles and bulky 12 ply yarn this comes together quite quickly. Like any knitting project the cost is related to how much you want to spend on your yarn. This hat can cost $5 to $50 depending on your yarn choice. You will need to know how to: Cast on Knit Purl C3F - Front Facing Cable or Left Leaning Cable C3B - Back Facing Cable or Right Leaning Cable P2tog - decrease by purling 2 stitches together K2tog - decrease by knitting 2 stitches together SSK - Slip two stitches to RH needle, knit both stitches together through back loop S1 PSSO - Slip 1 stitch, K2tog, Pass Slip Stiches Over the knit 2 together

Instructions

  1. Small 107915 2f2015 03 10 234456 img 0662

Cast on 90 stitches. I use the long tail cast on because I think it looks the neatest. Make sure that your stitches aren't twisted. I make sure that all the stitches are pointing to the ground when held horizontally. Place marker (to mark the start of the round). Knit the next stitch and pull the cast on yarn tightly. If you can't get it looking neat, don't worry too much. The rolled brim will hide the cast on edge.

Keep knitting every round until you create a curl in the knitted fabric. Once there's enough curl for your liking move onto the cable pattern. The pattern starts at the marker.

Row 1: *P3 K9 P3* Repeat 5 times Row 2: *P3 C3F K3 P3* Repeat 5 times Row 3: *P3 K9 P3* Repeat 5 times Row 4: *P3 K3 C3B P3* Repeat 5 times Repeat Row 1 to 4 enough times so that when you try it on the brim sits where you want it to. (To do this I slip all the stitches onto the cable and then try it on.)

    Once it's long enough begin to decrease. Decrease Row 1: *P1 P2tog K9 P2tog P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 2: *P2 C3F K3 P2* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 3: *P2tog K9 P2tog* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 4: *P1 K3 C3B P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 5: *P1 SSK K5 K2tog P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 6 *P1 K7 P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 7: *P1 SSK K3 K2tog P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 8: *P1 K5 P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 9: *P1 SSK K1 K2tog P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 10: *P1 K3 P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 11: *P1 S1 K2tog PSSO P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 12: *P1 K1 P1* repeat 5 times Decrease Row 13: *S1 K2tog PSSO* repeat 5 times Cut the working yarn leaving 20 cms. Using a darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining stitches. Pull tight and weave in all ends. Switch to double pointed needles when it becomes uncomfortable to work on the circular needle.

And there's your hat. It does fit an adult - I've used a doll as my model and clipped the back together so it fits. If you want to make it in a child's size, remove one of the cables (cast on 15 less stitches).
