Or roll up the brim a little for a jaunty look when the weather is slightly more clement. Next row: P30(36) in B, p12 in A, p30(36) in B. Rep last 2 rows once more. Using A, work 4 rows in st st, beg with a k row. Next row: K32(38) in B, k8 in A, k32(38) in B. Next row: P33(39) in B, p6 in A, p33(39) in B. Using B, work 2 rows in st st, beg with a k row. Using A, work 4 rows in st st, beg with a k row. Using B, work 4 rows in st st, beg with a k row. For a longer hat, rep last 8 rows once more to add 2 extra stripes. Large size only: Using A, work 2 rows in st st, beg with a k row. Next row: K6, [k2tog, k12] 3 times, [ssk, k12] twice, ssk, k6. 2. Making up and finishing For general information on putting your hat together, see pages 104–107. With RS of hat facing outward, oversew seam of “stalk” at top of hat using A. Using same yarn, join back seam of hat using the flat-seam technique (see page 104). Using C, work a small circle of chain stitch (see page 106) for each eye. Using A, work a French knot (see page 106) at center of each eye. Using D, embroider antenna in chain stitch. The hat can be made to fit snugly, as in the version left, or a little longer, as shown on the baby. To make the longer hat, you will need to add an extra stripe in each of black (A) and yellow (B) where indicated in the pattern.
