You Will Need (5 things)

  • Cushon Filling
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • Butterfly Material
  • Old Jeans

Steps (16 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

First, cut a square (measuring a little bigger than your cushion filler) from the jeans. This will be the main backing for the cushion.

  2. 2

Now print off your template. I got mine from Google images

  3. 3

using the other leg of the jeans, trace the template of the butterfly. Make sure the different segments in the middle are very clear!

  4. 4

Cut out around the OUTSIDE of the template, don't cut the insides yet. Leave this to one side for a moment.

  5. 5

Now cut a square (smaller than the square cut in step 1) and fold over the raw edges.

  6. 6

Sew it onto the denim square using straight stitch (very close to the edge)

  7. 7

Now sew on the denim butterfly using a close zigzag stitch all the way around the edge.

  8. 8

Zigzag stitch around the segments inside as well

  9. 9

(This technique is called "Mola". it means "reverse appliqué". For this the material is layered, the design is selectively cut out across the layers, the edges of the cut-out material are tucked under and then stitched in place. The end result is the revelation of the design in the colors of the material beneath.)

Anyways...using a stitch ripper, rip a hole in the denim layer. Be carful not to rip the butterfly fabric underneath!

  10. 10

Now, using small sharp scissors, cut out the denim layer. Here's one completed

  11. 11

here's one completed, it take patience, but it looks nice when it's done :)

  12. 12

    Here's the whole butterfly

  13. 13

Now cut a square (the same size as your denim square) from the butterfly material

  14. 14

Pin and sew in the invisible zip

  15. 15

It should look like this when it's opened out

  16. 16

Flip the two sides RS together, sew around the 3 raw edges and you're done!
