Description

As I was going to be showing at an exhibition I decided I needed a nice little box to display my business cards. As I am a crafter, it had to be hand made! Using materials I had at hand I spent a fun evening my little box. Tutorial and template can be downloaded at www.craftycripple.com/Business Card Box.pdf

Instructions

  1. I chose two contrasting colours for my box. You may want to use only one, or maybe a larger selection. I used around 7" x 7" of felt.

  2. Using the template I cut out the five pieces of plastic canvas and 10 shapes of felt.

  3. This box is plain, but you could decorate it with buttons or beads. If you want to decorate, I suggest you do it before stitching the pieces together so the wrong side of the work is hidden.

  4. Using 2 strands of embroidery silk threaded in a sharp needle, I made a knot and pierced the wrong side of one of the pieces of felt, near the edge.

  5. Placing the 2 corresponding pieces of felt with the wrong sides together and the corresponding plastic canvas piece between, I whip stitched round the edge of the shape. Once the stitching was complete I passed the needle back through the felt for around an inch and trimmed the threads.

  6. I continued to form the rest of the sides of the box, following the instructions in Steps 4 and 5.

Once all the pieces were created I used blanket stitch on the right side of the box to fasten them together into the shape shown in the image.

  8. Using the 1.5 mm needle, I crocheted 4 chains approximately 4" long, leaving tails at either end of each braid of approximately 2". If you do not know how to crochet you could either plait three strands of the perle cotton together, or use thin pieces of ribbon.

At one end of each chain, I threaded a needle with the tail and then threaded it into the braid. I then trimmed the end. With the other end of each chain I stitched the braid onto the box, on the right side, in the locations shown on the image.

This flat shape will travel easily to your destination, where it can be folded and the braids fastened together.

You now have display box for your business cards.
