These bunting flags are the perfect decorating accessory to any kids room given the theme. I have already posted a creation of the bunting flags in my sons room, nautical themed and I though I may as well do a tutorial as I made my daughter cupcake bunting, I hope you enjoy These are the directions I used to make my bunting with 11 flags in total.
Measure and cut out as many flag as necessary remembering you need two triangles to make one flag Measurements I use are: point to point top 9inch top to bottom 10inch so 9in x 10in Make sure if you are alternating in fabrics you cut out enough of each barbaric flags
After you have negotiated how many flags you need or want and which fabrics you are using you need cut and pin individual letters onto desired flags using the grosgrain ribbon. Remembering to sear the raw edges with a lighter so it does not fray Once your happy with shapes of the letters, hand stitch letters onto the front panel flags.
Once letters are sewn on, grab the front and back panel of the flags and pin together, right sides together
Sew two sides from top point either side to bottom point back up to the other side (top) leaving top unsewn
The flags should no look like this, like a triangle pocket. Tip the excess fabric from sides and from the bottom tip so it will create a point once turn in the right way
Fold each flag right way out and using the tip of a pair of scissors, gently push the bottom point out to create the tip
Iron all the flags flat so edges are nice and sharp, remembering to put a pillowcase or tea towel over the flags with grosgrain ribbon as it will melt with the heat of the iron if put directly on to it.
Lay out all the flags so you know the pattern layout and also how long you need to make the top piece and ties.
The fabric I am using for the top piece and ties doesn't have much length to it so I needed to use a fee cut length of fabric and I sewed the together to create a longer piece. Cut tie/ top piece to desired length x 4 inch width Like I said if need be sewn pieces together to creat length Eg: I used 3 pieces of fabric at 4 in x 17 in each.
Folding both edges lengthways into the centre, iron into place to creat the 4 inch strip of fabric into a 2 inch width strip continue and do this for the entire length
Then repeat this action again turning the now 2 inch width strip into a 1 inn width strip ( you are creating a sturdy strip to hold the flags.
Find the centre point of the centre flag ( or if you have an even amount of flags the centre point maybe the two corner points of two flags next to each other) and start from the centre out to pin in all the flags to the centre of you folded strip of top fabric, sandwiching flags between the two halves.
Work your way through the flags and pin together the fabric strip and once you reach the ends fold in the tips to create a point, pin together
Once you have pined tips and flag in securely, before you sew, double check name spelt in ribbon is spelt correctly and everything is in the correct place
Sew in a nice straight line tip to tip making sure to secure the start and finish with a quick back stitch and double checking along the way you have sewn in each flag securely. Trim all excess lose cotton threads Hang up your creation and watch the kids smile ;)
