Bonfire Night Cake

with icing decorations

I saw a lot of bonfire night cakes online, they all looked great, so this is a mish mash of sunhatsandwellieboots and silversponge's cakes. I used a very elaborate cake recipe from; http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3092/ultimate-chocolate-cake but a simple or ready made cake would work fine!

You Will Need (3 things)

  • Various colours of Food Colourings
  • Cake
  • Roll Icing

Steps (9 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

First bake your cake according to your chosen recipe. I made a cake from two 18cm cake tins. I kept one half intact, and then divided up the other half into three circle of decreasing size. I used a saucer, mug and egg cup to make my layers of cake.

  2. 2

You need to make a ganache or butter cream icing to hold the decorations in place. I made a plain chocolate ganache from 200g chocolate and 183ml of double cream melted together. I poured in onto the cake until it was completely cover, I also used some to stick the layers together

  3. 3

I used half a pack of ready to roll icing to decorate the cake, and used the food colouring to colour the icing accordingly. For the flames I used red, yellow and then red and yellow to make orange colourings. I rolled the icing flat and with a sharp knife cut flame shapes out in all three colours.

  4. 4

For Guy Fawkes I rolled a circle in plain ivory icing for his face, and added a small ball for the nose, using a cocktail stick to make eyes and the nostrils. I 'washed' his face with red colouring to make it pinkish. Don't forget his signature tash!

  5. 5

Make another ball in green for his torso, and then two blue 'sausages' and two green sausages for the arms and legs. For added detail I made a 'ruff' by folding strips of ivory icing, and a black hat with red ribbon.

  6. 6

For the bonfire I positioned orange flavoured matchsticks and flake on the cake layers, I snapped the matchsticks to different sizes and cut the flake in half to make it look less uniform.

  7. 7

Place all the icing decorations on the cake, I used chocolate gel icing to stick the flames onto the side.

  8. 8

For the cake cutoffs and left over ganache I placed the crumbs into ramekins and squashed to reforma cake base. Then I poured ganache over the top, using small pieces of matchstick I made mini bonfires.

  9. 9

For the larger pieces of left over cake I cut into squares, topped with more ganache and left over flames...on the 5th I'll add indoor sparklers and candles!
