Black Angel Tutu Outfit

Angel/Fairy goes goth!

I was going to a concert on Halloween weekend and needed an easy costume that I could make the day of (I know, I know, procastination). It cost me about $15, using an old pair of butterfly wings that I've had sitting around for years. It was surprisingly easy to make and people at the show were pretty impressed :) The tutu is sort of a compilation of a bunch of different how-to's I've seen over the past few months and I decided to try my own, I wouldn't suggest wearing this to a concert though unless you want it to be ruined :\

Description

I was going to a concert on Halloween weekend and needed an easy costume that I could make the day of (I know, I know, procastination). It cost me about $15, using an old pair of butterfly wings that I've had sitting around for years. It was surprisingly easy to make and people at the show were pretty impressed :) The tutu is sort of a compilation of a bunch of different how-to's I've seen over the past few months and I decided to try my own, I wouldn't suggest wearing this to a concert though unless you want it to be ruined :\

Instructions

  1. Small photo

Tie the elastic around your waist so it fits snugly but isn't too tight; double-knot and trim off any extra.

  2. Small costume 022

Cut your tulle into strips; I found that 6" wide by 2-3 feet long works best since the skirt will be half that length. Tie the strips around the elastic by folding your tulle in half, then pulling the ends through the loop around the elastic band, it's a bit hard to explain but it's really simple.

  3. Small the scene is dead tour 058

Repeat with all 8 yards of your tulle and you're done with the tutu! You should have a quite poofy, very full skirt like so. If you so wish, you can glue ribbon around the top to make it fancier, or glue a bow on the front.

  4. Small wings

On to the wings: if you don't have cheap kids-Halloween-costume wings, simply take a piece of cardboard and cut the wings out as one whole piece (not two separate wings). Leave a small rectangle of space between your two halves so you have somewhere to glue the elastic. Fold in the middle so the wings are more flexible. For using dress-up wings: most are made using a wire border which has fabric stretched across it. I simply used my brute strength to bend the wire into a vaguely angel-wing shape.

  5. If you're lazy (like me), you can just glue the elastic straps on with plenty of hot glue. Or if you want to be all fancy you could cut two slits on the top, two on the bottom, and thread the elastic through vertically, then sew/tie/glue so you have a loop for each arm.

  6. Small costume 026

Now the fun part: cover everything with feathers! To keep the cardboard/your wings from showing through, you could paint it black first, but I didn't have enough time for that. When it's dry, glue your feathers on, starting at the bottom and working your way to the top, covering both sides. I ran out of feathers and didn't have time to buy more, so I used black fabric on the side facing my body.

  7. To make a halo: get a stiff headband (not the fabric kind), bend a piece of wire into a circle, attach it to the headband, and wrap it with fluffy marabou trim.

  8. Small s

For the skull makeup, using makeup crayons works best (eyeliner smears too easily). Draw two large dark circles around the eyes, a teardrop shape on the nose, and two lines coming out from the sides of the mouth. Add short vertical lines along the one from your mouth. Fill in the area from just under your ear to your jaw and down to your chin with black to make your cheeks look hollow.

  9. Small the scene is dead tour 055

Accessorize however you want! I glued a bow on the front of an old tank top, added some jewelry and tights, etc.

The finished product:D Just a hint, the makeup doesn't hold up well in a concert environment..
