It not only helps them survive, but it is also fun to watch the birds while they are eating.

You might be aware that in winter it is extremely difficult for birds to find enough to eat, wild birds seem like small miracles of life. You can help them by making birdfood treats to hang out on the tree or bush branches. Instructions

  1. Small 18733

A STRING OF PEANUTS: Use a needle and heavy thread to make a string of peanuts. The needle and thread are inserted through the outer shell and not through the peanut itself.

  2. Small 18737

BIRDFOOD CAKE: You could use suet (beef fat)but I used frying fat because I'm a veggie. - melt the suet - add birdfood (you can buy special birdfood for wild birds at the pet shop or either at the supermarket) - pour the mixture into small dessert cups, the plastic ones because they're easy to cut. - if you want to hang the birdfood cake onto a branch you can insert a wire but twist it first so it will hold the cake firmly. - put all cups in the refrigerator for at least 45 minutes. - cut cups loose, don't pull the cakes out of the cups since that will cause them to break. You could put bowl of water on it too but that's optional, my water keeps turning into ice.

  3. Small 18738

BIRD TABLE: use plywood (if you want it to be more durable buy water resistent) glue a rim onto the side which measures about 1cm. (you could glue it with wood glue or a glue gun) attach the table to a post of at least 2m. dig a hole in the ground 0.5m and put the post in it. Make sure it stands up right and sturdy.
