If you’re bored with garter stitch, try this woven stitch. It’s really easy and quick to knit. When blocked (or steam ironed), the fabric lies flat with an interesting texture on both sides. The fabric may also be wrapped around and seamed in the back for a sturdy, double-sided, super-skinny tie. The indigo-dyed cotton gives the project a 1960s hippie vibe, with the color fading through time like a pair of good blue jeans. (Beware: If tied around a light-colored fabric, indigo may leave a stain. With repeated washings, there should be less of a tendency for the indigo color to transfer.) It’s reminiscent of a necktie that a voguish character might wear in a vintage Italian film. This is good knitting, so I’ve named it Bene (Italian for “well done”). Salute! To make tie wider or narrower, cast on more or fewer stitches, making sure that you are casting on an odd number of stitches.

  2. CO 11 sts. Work 4-row Woven pat until piece measures desired length for tie, scarf, belt, or headband, ending with a RS row. BO pwise. FINISHING Single-sided tie: Cut yarn, leaving a 4" [10 cm] tail. Weave in all ends on WS, cutting off remaining yarn close to fabric; block the fabric so the tie lies completely flat. Double-sided tie: Cut working yarn, leaving a tail that is at least 11⁄2 times the length of the tie. Weave in all ends on WS, cutting off remaining yarn close to fabric. With RS facing, use tail to sew edges together using mat- tress st, forming a tube. Seam ends, then run tail through to interior of tube. Block tie so that tube lies flat.
