Using a handful of small beads you can transform an ordinary covered button into a thing of great beauty.
I run a textiles group at Tullie House in Carlisle and each month the curator gets an item from the collections out for us to look at. One month she selected a beautiful black bodice with amazing beaded buttons. I thought I'd like to have a go at making some so here's a simple tutorial for you so you can make some glamorous buttons too!

Step 1
Start by making your button. Following the instructions (if you have them) cut a circle of fabric big enough to cover the button blank.
Step 2
Place a little bit of wadding between the fabric and the button blank.
Step 3
Stretch the fabric over the button blank and the wadding and gather it inside the button.

You may need to do a line of small running stitches around the edge of the fabric circle and then use these as gathering stitches to fit the fabric into the button blank.
Step 4
Push the button back into place to hold the fabric in place and make your button.
Step 5
Now we're ready to start beading. Start your thread off with a couple of small back-stitches on your button and then begin stitching down your beads one at a time with a small stitch through each one. You can make a pattern, sew them on randomly or do whatever you fancy!
Step 6
Keep beading until your button is covered with beads. When you need to start a new piece of thread just make a couple of small stitches and then 'lose' the end under the fabric.

Enjoy your beautiful button!
