Instructions

  1. Small supplies 1279747290

Batik Stamping 1. Prewash T-shirt to remove any finishes that may prevent absorption of dyes. Dry and iron if very wrinkled. 2. Cover table with plastic tablecloth. 3. Cut a rectangular piece of parchment paper about the size of the T-shirt and insert it between the layers of the T-shirt to prevent the resist and dyes from bleeding through to the backside. This paper remains inside the shirt through the entire dyeing and microwave process. 4. Place T-shirt on sheets of plastic wrap that have been overlapped so plastic is slightly larger than shirt. 5. Plan placement of batik stamped design. Fold T-shirt in half to find center. Mark center of neckline with a pin. 6. Pour a small amount of Batik-EZ resist on a paper plate. Using a small brush, apply resist to the daisy stamp. Wipe off excess resist from stamp with end of brush. Wipe on paper towel. Beginning at the neckline, press half of the daisy stamp in the center of the shirt (remove pin before stamping). Then continue stamping half daisies from the center to the shoulder seams. 7. Then randomly stamp whole daisies over the front of the shirt. Stamps can really be placed anywhere – down a sleeve or around the hemline. If you're stamping on the sleeve, be sure to cut a piece of parchment and insert in the sleeve to avoid resist bleeding to the back of the sleeve. 8. Let the Batik EZ resist dry or use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time.

  2. Dye-Painting 1. Make a curry color: Wearing rubber gloves, measure 3 teaspoons Golden Yellow and ½ teaspoon Purple into a plastic container; add 1 cup very hot water (140º F); stir well. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water in the microwave or in a tea kettle. Note: Dip a strip of paper towel or scrap fabric in the dye solution to check the color. If color is too dark, add more water. If it’s too light, add more dye. 2. Then dye-paint around the batik stamped designs. Continue dye-painting using a wide brush with vertical strokes over the entire shirt. Turn shirt over and repeat dye-painting on the backside. 3. Make a pumpkin spice color: Measure and mix 1 teaspoon Tangerine dye, 1 teaspoon Sunshine Orange dye and ½ teaspoon cocoa in a plastic container; add 1 cup very hot water; stir well. 4. Dye-paint the pumpkin color around the daisies and then dye-paint a wide horizontal band of color across the center of the shirt and through the sleeves and along the bottom edge. Turn shirt over and repeat dye-painting on the backside. 5. Then mix 1 Tablespoon Scarlet dye with 1 cup water. Then paint Scarlet dye in the center of the daisy petals. 5. Lay shirt on plastic wrap. Place layer of plastic wrap over top and seal edges. Fold and place in the microwave. 6. Cover bottom of microwave with paper towels. Place plastic-wrapped T-shirt in microwave. Set on High for 2 minutes. Wearing rubber gloves, remove from microwave. Cut open plastic wrap. Allow fabric and wrap to cool. Remove parchment paper. 7. Wearing rubber gloves, rinse T-shirt under cool running water until water runs clear. Wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse and dry.
