Instructions

  1. The beginning of this shawl is completely knit in garter stitch (knit every row). You will be making 4 increases on the right side (always on the 3rd st and the 3rd from last st and around the center stitches) and 2 increases (always the 2nd st and 2nd to last st) on the wrong side throughout. CO 4sts with starting color. Row 1 (WS): k (add marker to front to distinguish right and wrong sides) Row 2 (RS): k1, (kfb)2x, k1 (6sts) Row 3 (WS): k1, kfb, k to last 2sts, kfb, k1 (8sts) Row 4 (RS): k1, kfb2x, pm, k2, pm, (kfb)2x, k1 (12sts) Row 5 (WS): k1, kfb, k to last 2sts slipping m, kfb, k1 (14sts) Row 6 (RS): k2, kfb, k to 1st bef m, kfb, slm, k2, slm, kfb, k to 3 sts bef end, kfb, k2 (18sts) Repeat rows 5 and 6 til 107 sts before 1st marker Repeat row 5 one more time (108 sts before 1st marker)

  2. Switch colors On a right side row, switch to new yarn color. Repeat rows 6 and 5 1 more time. (111sts bef 1st m)

  3. Begin lace pattern: The lace pattern is a row of eyelets in garter stitch followed by a diamond lace pattern and then finishing with several eyelet rows. The eyelet rows could be in other colors in order to use up more yarn or if you think you don’t have enough yarn to com- plete this section. I chose to make the eyelet row before the diamond lace and the one after in the same color as the diamond lace. You will continue the increases that have already been estab- lished through out the rest of the shawl as well. Eyelet row : Row 1 (RS): k2, kfb, k1, (yo, k2tog), rep ( ) to 1st bef m, kfb, slm, k2, slm, kfb, (k2tog, yo), rep ( ) to 4sts bef end, k1, kfb, k2 Row 2 (WS): k1, kfb, k to m, slm, k2, slm, k to 2sts bef end, kfb, k1 Row 3: k2, kfb, k to 1st bef m, kfb, slm, k2, slm, kfb, k to 3sts bef end, kfb, k2 Row 4: k1, kfb, p to m, slm, k2, slm, p to last 2sts, kfb, k1 Repeat this row for rows 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 Row 5: k2, kfb, (k4, yo, k2tog tbl), rep ( ) to 6sts bef m, k4, yo, k2, slm, k2, slm, k2, yo, rep ( ) to 6sts bef end, k4, kfb, k2 Note: when the yo is very close to the center sts, the kfb is left out because there will be no dec buddy and this will create the necessary inc for the center.
