Well, that depends on the size of your feet and of course personal taste... I'd cut longer stings at first, you'll get an eye measurement as soon as you've done a pair or two.
This is ordinary cotton yarn I think. I started with an open braid which is the part that loops around your toe. Then I just... well, looped the braid around my toe ( x) ) and joined both ends, working a standard knotting pattern.
Uhm, I go shopping with these, nobody has ever complained. Just last week a woman asked me where the heck the soles of my shoes were cause she thought these were some kind of real sandals. xD
