Baby Socks

The perfect pair of baby socks

Posted by Made By Eva

About

These are based on a pair of baby socks more than 25 years old! The recipe is long lost of course, but I love them so much that I just had to make a recipe myself. And now, I've made 10 pairs this year alone - some given to friends, some sold. They are (to me) the most perfect baby socks I've ever seen. Thanks to Krissie for loaning me her precious socks!

They might look a bit "square-ish" now, but that's just because they are brand new and unused. As soon as they are put on little feet they will be as round as round can be...

I've used Dale baby wool yarn and size 2,5 knitting needles. The yarn is 100% Merino wool, 50m grams = ca 165 meters, 32 stiches = ca 10 cm.

You Will Need (2 things)

  • Wool Yarn
  • Knitting Needles

Steps (6 steps, 180 minutes)

  1. 1

    Cast on 48 stiches

*k1, p1* Repeat to end of round.

Repeat the previous round another 14 times.

*YO twice, sk2p* Repeat to end of round.

*p1, k2* Repeat to end of round.

    Knit 3 rounds.

  2. 2

    k13

Purl back over the same 13 stiches you just knitted.

Repeat the last two rounds 7 times.

  3. 3

*k1, p1* Do this for the first 13 stiches - and now for the part I find difficult to translate...: Along the side, "pick up" 16 stiches. That's more than usual, so you might find it difficult to fit in all 16 sts, but it is possible. Just go for it and cram them all in! ;) Continue along the three needles with the *k1, p1* pattern. Pick up another 16 stiches along the other side. You should now have 80 stiches and be back to the corner you started from.

*p1, k1* Repeat to end of round.

*k1, p1* Repeat to end of round.

Repeat the last two rounds 2 times.

  4. 4

    *k1, p1* repeat over 14 stiches, p65, k1.

    *p1, k1* repeat over 14 stiches, bind off 65.

You should now have 15 stiches remaining in total. One of these is left over from the binding off on the previous round and should be considered as knitted already. The first round is therefore *p1, k1* over the other 14 stiches.

*k1, p1* Repeat to end of round (15 stiches).

Repeat the last round 48 times.

    Bind off all stiches.

Sew the bottom to the sides of the sock.

  5. 5

Take 3 strands of yarn, ca 300 cm long each. Tie them together in one end and unwind each one until the fibres are almost parallell (left). Allow the three strands to wind together into one thick strand (middle). Twist this strand very tight, put one end together with the other end and allow the now double strand to wind together to form a helix (right).

  6. 6

Cut this into two strands of ca 45 cm each - remember to tie knots before cutting!
