Last Halloween my nephew wanted to dress as a pirate. It made perfect sense to dress his little brother as a parrot, of course! I snagged one of his old hoodie and pants sets and went to work! With adjustment, this idea can make your little one into any animal: kittens, a cow, bears, mice, a unicorn, go nuts!
Last Halloween my nephew wanted to dress as a pirate. It made perfect sense to dress his little brother as a parrot, of course! I snagged one of his old hoodie and pants sets and went to work! With adjustment, this idea can make your little one into any animal: kittens, a cow, bears, mice, a unicorn, go nuts!
Using a template or drawing by hand, cut feather shapes out of felt for two wings and a tail. I used three colors (red, yellow, and orange), creating a graduated wing and tail by cutting each piece a bit smaller than the last. You'll also cut two white eyes, and two small black pupils (see below for shape ideas).
Pin each piece of felt to fusible web, and cut along the edge. Layer the first feather color down on the back of your hoodie and iron according to fusible web instructions. I usually use the hottest setting and press firmly, while moving the iron slowly to prevent burning. Once the web has cooled and you're sure it is good and fused, do the next layer. Repeat until all three layers of tail and wings are attached. **Note: I wanted the edges of the feathers to hang loose, so I only pinned fusible web to the top half of each feather piece. You can see how the feathers hang off the shirt above. Feel free to fuse the entire piece, depending on the size of your pieces and the look you want to achieve.
Laying the hood flat, iron each white piece and then black piece to create eyes, just as you did with feather pieces.
The beak was a bit of trial and error! I did a bunch of pinning and cutting to get a shape that I liked, then hot glued it together into a pointy, curved cone. Sorry I can't be precise, so you'll have to play around! Then stuff the beak with batting.
Now fold the edges of the beak opening in so that you have a half inch seam and hot glue them to the top of the hood.
Once this step was completed, the costume was ready! We paired it with the matching red pants, and pulled a pair of yellow socks up over the pants to his knees. Perfect!
