Going Wild for Animal Safari Fashions!

Wild animal prints are roaming all about this fashion season and I wanted in on the action! Of course, being the type of gal that loves a challenge, I decided to give a go at creating the patterns myself by sponge and brush painting with Rit dye. It took some tweaking but I think it came out pretty ferocious.

Description

Wild animal prints are roaming all about this fashion season and I wanted in on the action! Of course, being the type of gal that loves a challenge, I decided to give a go at creating the patterns myself by sponge and brush painting with Rit dye. It took some tweaking but I think it came out pretty ferocious.

Instructions

  1. Small making animal dye spots 1276472481

Creating Spots: 1--Cut a piece of butcher or craft paper to fit inside the camisole to prevent spots from bleeding through to the other side. Place dyed camisole on sheets of paper that have been overlapped so the paper is slightly larger than fabric. 2--Grab those rubber gloves again and shake up some Rit Dark Brown dye. Measure ½ cup dye into a small container. Add 1 Tbsp of tap water and stir well. Cover with plastic wrap. 3--Line the bottom of your microwave with paper towels. Place dye in microwave and nuke on HIGH for 30-60 seconds until the dye is hot. 4--To make the spots, use a combination of a sea sponge and stencil brush. Cut or tear sea sponge into a small shape. Dip sponge in dye and squeeze out the excess. Then press sponge onto fabric. Cover the whole front of the camisole with random dye spots. Then fill in with spots made with the stencil brush. Note: Continue to reheat the dye to keep it hot while making the animal spots.

  2. 5--Turn camisole over and repeat the spotting process on the back side.

  3. Small dyed top in microwave 1276472555

6--When finished, remove the dye-spotted camisole from paper and place on overlapping sheets of plastic wrap. Then cover with plastic wrap and seal outer edges. 7--Fold to fit into the microwave lined with paper towels. Set on HIGH for 30 seconds. Nylon can be heat sensitive, so keep an eye out. Check fabric after 30 seconds. Then repeat for another 30 seconds. Remove from the microwave. Carefully cut open the plastic wrap and allow to cool. 8--Rinse camisole in cool water until water runs cool. Wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse and hang dry.

  4. Dyeing the Skirt: 1--Wearing rubber gloves, pour 3 Tbsp of Dark Brown dye and 1 Tbsp Golden Yellow dye into a large container. Add 8 cups of very hot water and stir well. 2--Immerse wet skirt into dye bath for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously until desired color is achieved. 3--Rinse skirt in cool water until water runs clear. Wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse and hang dry.

Hmmm, don't know what's up with the supply list feature on the top of the page. I'll check into the problem. In the meantime, here's what I used to make this project.
