You Will Need

Tapestry Needle Measuring Tape Scissors Stitch Marker
Yarn: 1 skein of Malabrigo Worsted yarn (160-216 yards), 100% single ply merino wool
Needle: US 9 (5.5 mm) 16" circular and set of dpns (or size needed to get gauge)
Gauge: 4 sts and 5 rows = 1 inch in stockinette stitch
  • Step 1

Cast on 83 sts using long tail cast on, being careful not to twist. Join in the round and add a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.

  • Step 2

    1. Garter Ribbing: (approx. 1.5”/3.8 cm)

    Round 1: purl
    Round 2: knit

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 three more times. (A total of 8 rounds)

  • Step 3

    2. Body of Hat: (approx. 5”/12.7 cm)

Follow the Background Lace pattern (see Background Lace Chart) for 12 rounds. (3 repeats)

Repeat Garter Ribbing two times. (4 rounds)

Follow the Background Lace pattern for 12 rounds. (3 repeats)

Repeat Garter Ribbing two times. (4 rounds)

  • Step 4

    3. Crown Decreases: (approx. 2.5”/6.4 cm)

    Round 1: (k5, k2tog) around to last 6 sts, k6
Round 2 and all even rounds: knit
    Round 3: (k4, k2tog) around
    Round 5: (k3, k2tog) around
    Round 7: (k2, k2tog) around
    Round 9: (k1, k2tog) around
    Round 11: (k2tog) around
    Round 12: knit

  • Step 5

    4. Finishing:

Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail, pull through your last stitch and weave in the ends on the wrong side of the hat. (And, yes, there IS supposed to be a line to show where the back of the hat is :D)

  • Step 6

    NOTE:

This hat is a bit deep for greater warmth and wearability - and also to cover the ears. If you find this hat to be TOO deep for your head, complete only 2 out of the 3 repeats of the Lace Background pattern between the garter ridges or leave out the second set 4 rounds of garter stitch after the second set of pattern rounds of hat.

Some knitters have also opted to do a bit more decreasing at the top of the head. You can continue with the decreases (as established) until you have the desired amount of stitches left on the needle before ending.
