Make a Functional Art Piece.
I had picked up some clock parts, and shuffled around a few ideas in my head to create a functional piece of art, with canvas.

I had a very large (18 inch by 24 inch) canvas, and decided to do a mixed media Alice in Wonderland piece, to include the White Rabbit's pocket watch as an actual time keeper.

This is more of a visual guide to what I did, rather than a tutorial. But if anyone was curious, I decided to show a few of the steps I photographed along the way.

I hope you enjoy it!

    Step 1

First, I gave my canvas a Coffee wash to make it less stark, and appear more aged.

In the corner, I drew a small chess board.

Then, using a mix of red and brown acrylic paints, I covered the canvas in a chevron pattern with masking tape, and sponged paint over it.

I then covered some of the overlap with a mix of tan and white acrylic to match the coffee stained coloring.

I found some illustrations online, and cut them out. I also found a clock-face and glued it to a CD. Later, I created a "pocket watch" from cardstock.

I took the colorless illustrations, and filled them in using water colors.

The canvas would be too impersonal as just a collage, so I drew a large illustration of the Caterpillar to cut out, and add to the middle.

Here, I am beginning to place my collage, and began gluing them in place with modpodge.

Here, I've taken book pages that were salvaged from another project, and created roses (the book was actually Harry Potter). I've also glued down more items, including flat marbles, and a playing card.

Adding more detail, the roses have been "painted" red by playing-card guards (made with actual playing cards, scrap paper, and sharpie), and quotes have been added to various places in sharpie.

I then went back over everything, including the quotes, with mod podge to reinforce, and began working on the clock mechanism.
