You can find these nifty crochet appliques on Etsy or Ebay for a few bucks a piece. These appliques come in all shapes and sizes, some are meant specifically to be front or back yokes, but it's really up to you how you use them.

Instructions

  1. Small pieces

I'm using this applique as a back yoke on a raglan sleeve knit dress I'm making but you can attach an applique to just about any kind of top/dress pattern. Cut out all your pattern pieces according to the directions.

  2. Small crochetapppined

I'm adding the applique to the back. The top of the applique will make the new back neckline. It's much easier to attach the applique before sewing the garment together. Lay the back piece flat and layer the applique on top, right sides facing up, and pin. make sure not to stretch out the pattern piece or the applique. One of the problems with appliques is you may have to adapt your pattern to fit your applique and change your neckline. If this were a set-in-sleeve dress I'd just line up the top ends of the applique with the shoulder line. In this case I'm letting it stretch over the raw edge slightly and I'll cut it off later when I assemble the dress.

  3. Small crochetappstitch

Using matching thread and a narrow zig zag stitch carefully stitch around the entire edge of the applique, again, be sure not to stretch anything out of place.

  4. Small crochetapptrim

Using your scissors carefully trim off the interior fabric behind the applique.

  5. Small crochetapptrimcloseup

Get as close as you can to the stitching without clipping the applique or the fabric.

  6. Small crochetappfinished

Finally assemble your garment as usual. The only difference is that you'll need to true up your front neckline to line up with the new back applique neckline and adjust your collar/neck binding to fit only the front of your garment.
