Cool coasters made from old 45 records

It seems that no one has a record player any more, and 45's are ending up in thrift shops. I picked up a bunch at 5 for a dollar. Here is a great way to give new life to outdated technology! (sorry, would have added better step by step pics, but computer was being weird and would not load them. But the steps are pretty self explanatory so it should be fine)

It seems that no one has a record player any more, and 45's are ending up in thrift shops. I picked up a bunch at 5 for a dollar. Here is a great way to give new life to outdated technology! Instructions

  1. Small march 2011 007 1301385514

    1. Using your craft knife, carve around the center of the 45 several times. You can also use a Dremel tool, but I found that to be very messy and leaves a rough edge.

    2. After tracing around the center of the 45 several times, gently bend the record plate to break off.

  3. 3. Use a file (I used a foot file from a pharmacy) or sand paper to smooth the edges.

  4. 4. Trace the 45 on to felt and cut the fabric slightly smaller than the coaster.

  5. 5. Use white glue, hot glue or mod podge to attach the felt to the back of your coaster.

  6. Small march 2011 013 1301385869

    6. I used mod podge to seal the front of the 45 to keep cold drinks from ruining the front of the coaster. You could use nail polish or skip this step all together, but the coasters will not last as long.
