Meet the Author

Hey there, can you introduce yourself?

Medium ldw 4 2

I'm a Jill of many trades. An author, teaching artist, blogger, designer, fabric fanatic, and entrepreneur! When I'm not writing, teaching, or making things you'll likely find me spending time with my husband having fun someplace in Brooklyn, NY!

Tell us a bit about the book?

‘Sew Fab’ is the book that I wish I would have had as a girl! I was very shy and afraid to express myself through fashion. My hope is that ‘Sew Fab’ will help young fashionistas, of all ages, to define their unique style while creating a wardrobe of classic pieces that they can refine as they grow. The projects begin with simple accessories and evolve to more detailed projects, including a little black dress!

What was the inspiration behind it?

I teach sewing and design classes for tweens and teens and was surprised when I went to search for a book that there was nothing on the shelves that spoke to today’s girl.

Which is your favourite project?

That’s difficult -- I wear them all from the bow to the dress! If I had to select one, this month, it’s the afterschool tote since I’m running about to book events and I need to pack everything neatly in one place. But seriously I love them all!

What is your craft space like?

It’s a colorful studio space in a huge warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn. You’ll find a mixture of vintage and new things. It's also filled with oodles of fabric, notions, machines and fashion books for inspiration.

I share the space with my husband who is a photographer. It’s a great space collabo!

Have you always been creative?

I’ve always been referred to as ‘different’ - so I guess yes! I have a vivid imagination which I attribute to growing up as an only child. Many hours were spent entertaining myself while my parents worked.

When did you first start crafting?

At about age 4. I would assist my mom as she made our clothes, it’s funny to think back on it – we worked together in our kitchen. The first thing I remember making independently was a hand-sewn collection of clothes for my Barbie’s from scraps.

Who are your crafty heroes?

Oh, there are so many – right off hand I’d say:

-Betsey Johnson / she has the good energy, style and a zest for life that comes through in her designs.

-Dianna Vreeland / she was a brilliant fashion editor.

-Kimberly Wilson / she is a business rock star with style + smarts and a rapidly growing creative yogi/empire! Lucky to have her as a mentor.

-SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) / she writes the most useful self-help books ever.

-Tavi Gevinson / she young, imaginative and understands the importance of artist evolution.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m easily inspired so I absorb beauty like a sponge.

Right now I’m doing lots of pinning on Pinterest. I also enjoy solo artist dates to galleries, museums and cultural spaces.

What's next for you?

Well, I finished writing my 2nd book for tweens also being published by Laurence King. It will be released in Feb. 2016. It’s called, Fab Fashion: My Style File.

My personal goal is to write a book a year so I guess I need to get started with the next one soon.

You can always find out what I’m up to by following my blogs.
