Meet the Author

Hey there, can you introduce yourself?

Medium shelly kim

Hey friends! I'm Shelly Kim, the artist behind Letters By Shells! I am a self-taught artist with an emphasis in lettering, digital art, watercolors and fun illustrations, based in Los Angeles, CA.

I first discovered the act of creating art as a creative outlet from my desire to release stress from my full-time job back in 2015.

After exploring my art hobby for a few years, I eventually turned my art hobby into a full-time career making it a mission for my artwork to express love and positivity. My hope is that my art creations and journey will inspire others to believe that anything in life is totally possible.

I have also collaborated with select clients including Michaels, Apple for their Today at Apple event, Adobe Students, Chase Bank, Enso Rings, and Mixbook.

I am also the Author of Digital Hand Lettering and Modern Calligraphy, Co-Host of the “Hobby to Business” Podcast, Dog Mom, and I have a huge passion for teaching all things brush lettering, iPad lettering, watercolors and DIY projects!

Tell us a bit about the book?

My book, Digital Hand Lettering and Modern Calligraphy gives you an overview starting with brush lettering using brush pens then goes in depth about lettering on the iPad.

There are multiple projects throughout the book that can be created on the iPad such as custom gift tags, name cards, party invitations and prints.

The book also covers all the steps you need to take to get started with brush lettering and iPad lettering!

What was the inspiration behind it?

I was inspired to write this book because I remember when I first explored brush lettering and lettering on the iPad, I was really confused and overwhelmed.

After I started understanding how to use the iPad to create art and use it for my lettering + the brush lettering techniques, I then started teaching in-person workshops.

During the workshops, I would share the fundamentals on getting started with iPad lettering including tons of tips + techniques when exploring brush lettering!

Since I absolutely love teaching all things lettering related, I was inspired to eventually write a book based on all the things I’ve learned over the years of teaching my Brush Lettering and iPad Lettering workshops.

Which is your favourite project?

I absolutely love the 3D lettering and print/cardmaking projects!

What is your craft space like?

I thrive working from anywhere as long as it has a beautiful view and some good coffee! If I’m working in my craft studio, on most days, it’s got art supplies laying around scattered everywhere and my thoughts/notes are usually written on sticky notes all over the wall.

Have you always been creative?

Yes, but in other things such as scrapbooking, cardmaking and sewing! I explored lettering and watercolors in 2015 for the first time not knowing anything about using these mediums.

When did you first start crafting?

I believe I first started crafting when I was 6! I made my first tote bag by using recycled old clothes and staples! I even decorated it using an airbrush pen! ;)

Who are your crafty heroes?

I honestly find inspiration from anyone that focuses on spreading love and positivity, and finding ways to uplift others!

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration pretty much anywhere, from visiting my local coffee shops/cafes, eating new foods, exploring nature, and traveling!

What's next for you?

This year, I’m hoping to finally launch my online academy on Getting Started with Brush Lettering and iPad Lettering by the end of the year!

My goal is to create an open and welcoming space for anyone wanting to learn all things lettering and to have a community of people that will motivate and cheer each other on!
