Crafting for boys
It's my boyfriend's birthday on the 16th of June and I want to make him something lovely, but I don't know what. I'm good at making things for girls cause I can make jewellery and customise dresses and hair clips and things, but boys are hard =( I know I'm stenciling a tshirt, but I need more plans.
Please!
This thread is wonderful...

Nice one, thanks Roma!
well I made two of those record bowls one for me and one for my bf's birthday and I also made a little crochet person thing...his birthday is on the 25th of this month so I've still got time to get him some other things too
umm Im making my boyfriend car seat covers, they appreciate things like that. depends what he's into, really. if all else fails, his favourite food=you win
Well I'm thinking about making him those rainbow cupcakes, except maybe make a big cake of them. But I always do cakes for peoples birthdays, so that's not a present as such.
I dunno, he's doing creative writing at uni at the moment, but I dunno what I could give him to do with that without being patronising. I could do a record bowl...he mentioned me making something for his place at uni but I don't know what. He really liked the gummi bear chandelier I showed him but I don't think I'm that clever.
hmm maybe something with qoutes from his favourite books/authors? then you could do a whole matching set over time. btw rainbow cake sounds amazing!
I you wanna do a bowl, you could do a record journal (its one of Cats projects) to match.
Uni place could need
bedding, cushions?
crockery/glasses? maybe you could paint a set of shot or beer glasses.
thats it, im out of tasteful ideas lol
Glasses sounds like a good idea, he does like to drink, and I think I have some glass paint lying around.
Okay, I've just thought that we both love Regina Spektor and always said that our song should be Samson because he has long blonde hair. How can I incorporate that?
I was thinking what might be cute is sewing one of the lines into a pillowcase, like "The stars came falling on our heads".
It's just a little funny cause I consider it to be a really sad song but he thinks it's romantic, so I guess for the sake of this I'll just go with his!
Ooh and his username on the website we met on was The Lone Marmot, could I do something with marmots? They look silly though...
Haha I'm worried I'll go overboard
All those ideas sound great go for it if you have the time/monies, I love finding and giving people presents and personal presents are always the best.
my boyfriends birthday present list so far is: crochet music alien thing, record bowl, a beatles themed tin, a stupid toy chicken thing and tomorrow I'm getting him a book and an audio book (well the audio book is from my mum).
But I feel like I should over do it because I don't spoil him enough because I don't have the money and he buys me loads of things and lends me money without expecting it back at all. And also I love him and he's very nice to me in every way, so I say over do it! Also he's not getting any proper presents from his parents this year because he's a big boy now, he'll be 22. If he reads this I'll be very cross!
I like the lyric idea, very sweet. you could also screen print/stencil it, if you were alredy doing a shirt.
you met on internet? how lovely, how long did it take for you to meet him in person?
queenfairpants, the beatles tin sounds amazing, and how nice your boyf. sounds! my manchild will be 23 this year but it still doesn't stop me from doing a massive christmas stocking for him every year lucky sod
Well..god, we must have met each other online about three years ago, then met up about two years ago, and for a long time we only saw each other occasionally and then suddenly in the last couple of months we started seeing each other all the time.
Yeah I was thinking that stenciling the pillowcase might be easier haha.
I had ANOTHER idea. I thought because he's a writer I could collect a few love poems into a book for him. The only problem is, my favourite writer is Sylvia Plath, who isn't big on love poems. But I might try and find some early ones when she first fell in love with Ted Hughes, and I have one by Carol Ann Duffy, and there's always good old Shakespeare and maybe some Christina Rossetti. Can anyone else reccomend someone?
Plath is alright with love poems to do with her children... although I guess that's a bit weird isn't it?
John Betjeman is pure wicked. Dylan Thomas too, and I got some beauties from the pre 1770s if you'd like me to dig into my poetry collection and pull 'em out for you. (After Come Dine With Me, y'understand.)
Yeah I can't really do love poems for children. I think it freaks him out slightly when every time I see a baby I make puppy-dog eyes at him.
Ooh okay I'll search those. And yeah, if you could have a look that'd be great, but no rush haha
The Passionate Shepherd to his Love - Christopher Marlowe
The Sun Rising - John Donne
To Althea, From Prison - Richard Lovelace
These are the nicest ones I can think of... A lot of others are "Yeah I love you now... but when you're old and wrinkly, not so."
The Sun Rising is one of the most beautiful poems ever. I don't mean to patronise but the first time I read it I was like "WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?" so if you want a hand I'll be happy to explain! Now I've done my research, of course.
