Varnish/glaze for lanterns

Hi all,

I'm trying to make my own candle holders & lanterns - but am trying to find a suitable varnish or glaze to protect them. Everything I have found so far is 'highly flammable' which makes me just a tad nervous. Can Anyone please help & recommend what I could use?

isn't it just highly flammable when a liquid or wet?
