Making a Screen???

I work part time as a holistic massage therapist and usually see clients at home. I've recently gained some new clients outside of my area so I've bought myself a trolly for my couch and found a cheap space to work from. The only problem is that its upstairs at a shop - it barely gets used but the toilets are up there so the shop staff occasionally have to nip up.
My clients are cool with this and I'm mostly doing back massages so they would be mostly covered with towels.
I was however thinking I could make a screen to put up to give a bit more privacy. I don't drive so it would need to be cheap to make, very lightweight and easy to assemble.
So far I've been thinking of making one out of garden canes - you can buy really tall ones for about 99p for a set of 5. I could nail them to make 3 rectangles and cover them in lightweight fabric. I'm not sure how to hinge them though.....
Any thoughts? I know we have some very good, crafty brains on this site so I thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas. Thanks Happy

Hmmm... I'm not sure whether my description is going to be all that great, but hopefully you'll be able to visualise it. Also, I apologise in advance for my long and over-detailed reply (I seem to be making a habit of it...)

What you could do is make three separate screen panels, with canes on either vertical side of each panel. You'll also want a gap between the bottom of the cane and the bottom of the fabric panel and the top of the cane and the top of the fabric panel. You then need to get some cord or twine or something like that and bind the top and bottom of the panels together, which will allow the screen panels to 'pivot', as it were, depending on how loose you make the string. I attempted to draw you a picture on here, but it kept mucking up when I posted the comment so I deleted it. Happy

Putting holes through the canes at the top and bottom and threading the string through that might make them more secure. Also, if you stretch your fabric tight enough you won't need to put canes across the top and bottom (horizontal sides). You could always do a double layer and put some iron-on interfacing between them to make them slightly stiffer - the fabric still stays fairly flexible. Also, you might want to make some kind of 'feet' out of clay or something to go on the bottom of the canes, because I'd have thought you might have a hard time getting it to stand up otherwise!
I have no idea whether this would actually work as I've never tried it, but we used to have a clothes airer with this kind of hinge design and it worked pretty well.
On another note, If it's going to be fairly long/tall, maybe you could ask the shop whether they've got a spare corner where you could store it? It should fold down fairly small widthways and you could make some kind of bag/wrap for it to keep it together and stop it getting dusty and stuff.

Good luck with making it - you should post it on here when you're done so we can all see it! Happy

PS. I'm kinda new to the site, so I've got no idea whether there's a personal message function on here, but if you want better diagrams I could maybe draw some up and find some way of getting them to you.

Cool ideas. I like the idea of iron on iterfacing to make the fabric stiffer. Also thanks for the ideas on hinges - I can imagine how it works but I think I'd have to make a hole so it didn't come off at the top. I also had a though about using screw in hooks, where the hook is big enough to slide the next cane through. I'm not sure if they'd go through the cane okay though, they may split it :/ I'm going to have a play around with your idea for hinges as I've got some smaller canes already that I can play with. Thanks Happy

No worries. I might put a tutorial up, just for the lolz and in case anyone else suddenly needs to make something like this! Happy
