Well if knitting or crocheting is something that interests you, there are many places on CO+K that could give tutorials. YouTube has a lot of tutorials as well.

You could make a lot of decorative things with plastic canvas (it comes in sheets of plastic that have uniform little square holes). There's a tutorial for tetris magnets somewhere on here, but you can do so much more. You can make boxes for decorative and storage purposes. All you do is thread the yarn through the squares and wrap it around each little side. It can be time consuming, but usually it's pretty quick. It's VERY easy, too.

As for other options, you could buy the circular embroidery hoops, wind the string and yarn between the layers, and create geometric designs. Add beads or buttons if you want a little something extra.

You can try weaving with the yarn and possibly the other string too. Here's a tutorial to make your own weaving board

I have a lot of knifty knitter looms too, I have knitted tons of stuff WITHOUT NEEDLES!! It's really easy and much faster, you can start out knitting hats and scarves. Here is one my tutorials for them using my looms. You can also do these on the long looms. The purple loom can be bought by itself at walmart, the round looms come in a set of 4 different sizes and so does another set of long looms with slightly smaller pegs.

Also so more info about the looms if you are interested.

Perhaps you can get some scrap plywood and glue the yarn onto it to create a picture. Which is something I've never thought of before, but I may do now (I knit so the only thing I think to do with yarn is...knit!). I'm thinking hot glue or super glue would work but be very tedious (and you'd probably get burned/stuck a lot...). I'll look into what adhesives work well on wood (besides wood glue, I'm not sure if you'd want to use that).

You could also do oversized friendship bracelets or use the same techniques to make belts or necklaces. Finger weaving/finger knitting is also easy to learn, though I only know how to make chains with it. Maybe you could braid it up and sew it in patterns onto an old shirt, or use it to decorate an old handbag. In fact, yarn + glue = just about anything....

I think I'll see how feasible these ideas I've just given you are and post tuts if I come up with anything.
