you know how ostriches stick their heads in the ground?
well, a long, log time ago, some shortnecked giraffes saw that and really wanted to be able to hide like that too. after all, if they couldn't see anyone, no-one could see them.
so the giraffes stuck their heads in the ground....and got all this gross dirt and worms in their ears, mouth, eyes....everywhere! their horns got all dirty, too. that made them sad. very sad.
so the giraffes looked up to the great Giraffe in the sky, and asked 'oh great Giraffe, how do we hide by putting our heads away without getting dirt all over our heads?'
and the great Giraffe answered "hmm. that's a tough one. well, i'll fix something.tomorrow at noon, i will have an arrangment for you"
the giraffes thanked the great Giraffe in the sky, and the next day at noon they went to their sacred tree grove to find out what their deity had arranged for them. there, they saw some strange, fluffy white things floating about. the great Giraffe then appeared to them and told them these were called clouds, and they were there for the giraffes to hide their heads in without getting dirty. the clouds were good giraffes that had died and gone to the Great giraffe in the sky that the great Giraffe had called to help the giraffes. the giraffes were thrilled, of course, and threw a great big party to thank the Great Giraffe.
for a while, the giraffes and the clouds (and the ostriches, who didn't notice all this because their heads were in the ground) lived happily together. but after some time, the clouds began to miss their loved ones, up in the sky with the great Giraffe. and they slowly, slowly drifted upwards, over the course of hundreds of years. the giraffes grew long necks so they wouldn't have to be separated from their beloved clouds, but at some point they just couldn't grow any longer necks anymore. and up to this day, the giraffes and the clouds miss each other..and the giraffes kept their long necks to be closer to the clouds.
however, every now and then, the great Giraffe lets the clouds go down to the giraffes again to say hi. when that happens, we experience it as a misty day.
and that is why giraffes have long necks
and it wasn't supposed to be that long :p

why does fire burn?
