Thinking of opening an esty shop.

So I've been thinking of opening an esty shop for a while now. Just wanted to get any tips you all have about it? I've been kinda iffy about it for a while now.

i like having my shop on etsy, there are other handmade sites but they are not so well known outside the artsy community. The best advise I have is take great pictures. Build a small light box and make sure the pictures are always in focus. Also don't rely on etsy to advertise for you because they don't. try to list something (or re-list something) everyday, promote yourself off site in a blog or twitter for example. I have a blog, twitter, and i post ads on craigslist for time to time. also some people say flickr helps direct sales too, but it hasn't for me. Make business cards and pass them out to anyone who expresses interest. good luck

I don't have an etsy store myself, so Im afraid I can't be of much help. I agree with Heather that photo's are important though ^_^
Goodluck!

Heather - Thanks for all the info. I didn't think of building a light box for pictures. Thats a really neat idea. I'm excited to do a shop but just looking around the site, it makes me nervous. I know its silly but true.

Photos can really be important, I think I'm just going to go through with itHappy Do my best

Hi Kristen! Heather gave a ton of great info! You can also get some really great articles on setting up your store on Etsy's blog. Dont be scared to open a shop, because first of all its free to start so you wont be loosing anything and you wont know how things will turn out unless you try!

I started my Etsy shop back in December and it has been a blast. Im still working on getting traffic to my store and just got my biz cards this week. Like Heather I have a blog and a twitter. Sometimes it is time consuming and I have to take a break from it (like I have the past couple weeks), but once I get time I start right back up again.
