Is it just me...

I really... REALLY! Don't mean to sound like a complete bitch... But I'm getting sick of all the tutorials that are (a) barely a tutorial or (b) written by someone who doesn't speak english well and the whole thing doesn't make any sense. Some of them are just so messed up that I honestly can't make heads or tails of what I'm supposed to be doing that I just give up, or try finding a different tutorial. I know that I'm not the greatest at making tutorials, but because I know that, I stopped writing them! I don't know. Maybe I'm just a mean person...

I don't think its mean - I don't have a problem with bad english as I know its not everyones first language and its a pretty confusing language to learn of the rules and grammar. I do however get a little annoyed by really obvious tutorials or ones that don't actually tell you how to make a version yourself. I mentioned this a while back on the problems and issues bit - I think I asked if the top crafter bit could be changed so it wasn't just based on quantity of projects added. I'd be interested in what others think though.

I think what's worst is some of the tutorials are perhaps barely tutorials because you can find it everywhere else in the internet - especially in "creative ideas" sites - which probably means its just a product of a copycat.

AGREED! There's one person who's been posting quite often and they're getting a bunch of likes, but then quite a few of the projects are copycats and they even cropped out the original watermarks on the pictures D:< (and they've had to remove some)...and if you go to their linked website it's a crafts store... O.o

I seems that people make tutorials just to get 'likes' and not for the 'craft' itself.

***English is not my first language, if anyone find mistakes on my how-to's please tell me!***

I think it should be said to that person that this behavior is not right and appropriate. The projects should be removed, the wrong person is getting credit for it. If necessary, the user should banned too.

I also like to point out that it's sometimes hard to say if a projects is really original. I visit so many blogs and sites for inspiration but I never download pictures. Sometimes I get up with a 'new' idea and I'm actually not quite sure if I made it up myself or if I've already seen it somewhere.

(Not first language either.)

Poor English it can be a bit frustrating at times, but I don't really get mad about it. I'm just glad that people from all over the world are trying to contribute their ideas.

But when it comes to the "barely-a-tutorial" tutorials, that can be irritating. And when people take credit for other people's ideas it just really ticks me off. If it's someone else's work, it's not that hard just to add the link and give proper credit.

I completely agree with Hella, sometimes I also forget if I got an idea entirely from my own imagination or from something I saw on the web. But I also never take pictures or entire tutorials, even if I have an idea that originated from seeing something, I will make it myself and make a tutorial of my way of making it...If I used someone else's tutorial I always link to the original.

English is not my first language either. I have noticed that some of the poor english is from Dutch people, it makes sense to me because my first language is Dutch, but I can see that some of it is translated quite literally... Not to point out the Dutch people here, I'm just saying we have a tendency to translate things a bit too literal. (And Google translate is not very helpful for that problem either)

I'm Dutch too and I'm having the same problem. Most of the time I recognize my own mistakes when I'm re-reading my own tutorials after it's being posted. The only thing I can do is practice.

I'm not bothered when I see spelling mistakes from those who speak English as a second language. I know I'd do a terrible job of it if I had to write in French on a much beloved website. I'm only bothered by it when English is their first language. It makes me want to slap them with a copy of Pygmalion.

As far as tutorials go, I've noticed one particular one which has cropped up a couple of times on here that is copied, pictures and all from a bridal site. I know I had made a version of the same project that I posted as a version a few years ago.

The person some of you are referring to might be http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/users/163045?
Anyways, about stealing others' ideas, this has happened to me a few times. Especially when it's so obvious someone followed my tutorial, using the exact same materials, and they don't credit me or they use my tutorial to sell the product. I talked about this on another post. It really bothers me.

Yes, Christa B ??? (Feeling a little attacked with all the caps and exclamations. Do I have to be worried?)

Hella: In the US, there is a slang word that is actually the same as your name. It can be used as an affirmation of what someone just said, which is what Krista was doing. It's just a strange coincidence that your name and the slang word are the same. Don't worry, nothing was aimed at you. Happy

Thanks Olivia, this actually clears up a lot. It's not the first time that I saw my name in a random message on the internet. I never knew what it meant Tongue
