The UN is trying to take away religious freedom. x.x

YEAH. They are trying to pass a resolution that would outlaw, anywhere in the world, anyone from saying that Jesus is God. I realize that to most of you, this isn't a huge issue, because this isn't what you believe, but to me, and billions like me, this IS an issue. It's government-sponsored discrimination of Christians.... and I'm already pissed.

It's outrageous that this is even CLOSE to passing. There's a petition online, but I wasn't able to sign it. Shlomi thought it was the page's flash, but when HE couldn't access the page, either.... Idk what's going on. -.-

I know this probably sounds like a conspiracy theory for those of you who are new to this information, but unfortunately, it's not the case. Happy

Okay, readying myself for the rotten tomatoes that will undoubtedly be thrown....

What? I don't keep up with the news, so I had no idea. I'm a Christian as well, but this would upset me just as badly if it were happening to the Islamic, Buddhist, or any other religion. It's just wrong to try and prohibit anyone from practicing their religion (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else of course). Outrageous!

I don't think that it's right, but I'm not gonna argue with them. In many countries people are discriminated against because they're NOT Christians and that's not right either. I don't think they're gonna achieve anything through what they wanna do but that doesn't make it acceptable for other countries to do it either. It shouldn't matter what religion you are, because it's a personal thing and no one has the right to judge someone because of what they believe

Im not religious, but I still believe in freedom of speech! It shouldn't be against the law to 'say' anything. we are all being controlled by the worlds elite like a herd of cattle, and nothing will change until we get angry and stand up for ourselves.

that is strange, I havn't heard about this

although I am not religous, I do believe is free speach

This is ridiculous! Why is it even being considered? Freedom of speech doesn't just mean what you are willing to listen to! I'm a Christian and I think everyone deserves the right to practice their religion. Terrorism is not religious. It's just hatred wearing a religious costume.

Would it be possible for you to give us the reference or source of which you're referring to? I just Googled the UN/religious freedom and no where does it refer to the UN banning religion.

I'm stumped that you would post a religion topic on an arts/crafts forum. I am all for the freedom of religion/speech and I am inclined to learn about what you're referring to.

Thanks!

With a little more research, yes, there was a proposal that went out, but that doesn't mean its set in stone. Its one thing if this did actually happen as opposed to someone stating for it to happen.

Also, if you would look further, people of the UN would like religions to learn tolerance and equality. You cannot tell someone what not to do (this is where freedom of speech/religion step into play). At least here in the US. But if you really think about it, the world's countries are represented and all of the world's countries have different cultures & religions brought with them. This resolution would never pass even if it were supported.

Religion has played a strong part in sculpting 'our worlds' as to what you see. Religion can be good or bad. Depends on how you use it. If you're using it to spread hate, intolerance, ignorance, then religion is bad. If you're using it to see the joy, happiness, and love with whatever (your) god has given you, then kudos. But if you haven't notice, religion has done more damage than good. Allah, Jehovah, Ganesh, Jesus... all have a 'higher' purpose to someone individually. Keep it (your religion) in your hearts and spread love, tolerance, and unity by your actions & clear use of responsibility.

I also am a christian, I see this as a sign of the times that we live in.So much has changed during the last 50 years, its amazing
how they want to just throw God out of every thing. It wont work, he will always be here, he lives in our hearts.

Wow, JD.

I posted because I have many friends here. In case you haven't noticed by now, many of us feel as though we are SAFE here, to post whatever is upsetting us, craft-related or not. It's suspicious to me that you only now started to post, and your very first post here is a criticism of a long-time member.

It's ridiculous that I can't even talk about religion when it is in the news, because SOMEONE I didn't even know existed (you) might take offense. It's like the act has already been instated. -.-

Additionally, there is NO country in the world today where people are discriminated against for not being Christian. To state such a thing is near-sighted and judgemental. NO true Christian condemns others, because real Christianity is all about LOVE. Of course, you wouldn't know it, because Christians have already been all but silenced, and the news skews everything toward the liberal/atheist side in order to be "politically correct." In fact, this is how this mess got started to begin with. People are just too afraid of being "politically incorrect" to admit it.

Tolerance is easy to say but difficult to obtain.

Everyone comes to their understanding of world events based on their beliefs and life experiences.

All I can add to this discussion is that I believe extremism in any form is wrong.

We all have the same basic needs and feelings as human beings regardless of how we choose to express our beliefs.

I feel blessed to live in a place where I can express my beliefs....even if I do get some strange looks sometimes Happy

Blessings to all contributors of this thread.

Ok I'm not religious so yeah this doesn't effect me but I'm upset to the point that it takes away someone's FREEDOM of speech!! Also since this is only applicable to Chritsianity atm isn't that in itself a form of racism? And if they do pass this, where will it end? With none of the other religions saying that their god is god? It'll either phase out religions in general (which doesn't affect me) or it'll upset religions and could start wars.

Well this is just my opinions anyway but I know I would be angry if they forced athiests to not be allowed the opinion or be allowed to say "there is no god!!!" or whatever.

BTW JD Rachie is right. Especially as this is in the rants and issues section doesn't mean that it HAS to be arts and crafts based. This thread hsan't started off nor contains threatening contents, only opinions.

Although to some extent I can see the negative sides of religion (though I'm not dismissing the good things) and although I agree with freedom of speech some people can overstep the boundaries - though this isn't with reference to religion, I'm making a general point.

For example, in the UK, we had our Rememberance Day celebrations last Thursday and our symobol of celebration is with a poppy (I don't know if it's the same elsewhere btw). Anyway I know this has nothing to do with religions (as Felecity W. said, it terrorism dressed up in religion, which is why so many people are wary of religion I think) a terrorist group gathered in Hyde Park and burnt a giant poppy and protested about our solidiers being in afghanistan etc. I'm sorry but if they don't like how things are in England then they shouldn't stay...

Wow. See, things like that poppy-burning are outrageous--and essentially, that is what is happening in the States now. Not to point out groups, because that honestly pains me, but Mexicans can burn the American flag, and they are not criticized. Muslims can attempt to pass sharia law in American courts. HOWEVER, I, as a Christian, have already been afraid for several years now, to express my own--VERY PEACEFUL--religious beliefs. It's outrageous, especially considering that Christianity poses NO threat to other religions, AND is the religion on which the USA was originally based.

The poppy-burning blows my mind--it's a good thing I wasn't there, or they'd all be in the hospital or 6 feet under, and I'd be awaiting trial. 0:-D

He's some news coverage on it:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1328703/Two-faces-Armistice-Day-Boy-brimming-pride-fanatics-burning-hate.html

Thanks Rachie, it makes me feel physically sick when I think about it and very very sad. My granddad who's no longer here served in the navy in the korean war and today I was also thinking about him, as well as all the other people in the army, navy, marine and royal air force sectors.

I think some of them were arrested but nothing ever gets done in this country. I don't mean to sounds racist when I say this but I feel that English people are treated as second class citizans now, especially in London. Multi-cultural society is lovely to see - to a point, but foriegn cultures dominate... if you get what I mean!!
