Why are most crafts "cute"

I have been a crafter for a looong time I am not going to say how many years that may be but let's say Carol Duvall is my inspiration. You younger folks can leave now if I need to explain who Carol is.

I love altered art but just can not stomach themes which are cute-see.
I live in the Midwest and unless you display your items in high priced art shows you just don't have a chance of a sale unless it is kid related or "country"

Until recently I owned a Comic Book Store and my craft or art if you wish leans more to the fantasy side which may range from Angels to Zombies depending where the muse takes me.

I love taking a traditional craft idea or product and using it "outside the box"
I am not a scrapbook fan however I use many of the products
I won't go on, just wanted to Rant thanks for listening

i don't think that most crafts are "cute" . right now amigurumi and kawaii things are popular, actually those are the type of things that attracted me to learn different craft techniques. i think that zombies and vampires are VERY popular right now.
sorry your things don't sell well in your area. that can be frustrating. Happy do you have an account on dwanda or etsy? that would be a good way to get your style of craft out there, i sure there are others that enjoy the same thing.
if you like what you make then just keep making it, doesn't have to be popular for you to enjoy. there is a type of toy that i love to make i think they are so cute but they just never sold at craft fairs or on my etsy. so now i just make them for friends.
also i am 26 and i know who Carol Duvall is Happy

crafting like art can be anything you want it to be, right now Kawaii is very popular. I like steampunk and gothic crosses and icons too

I'm with you Michelle being a fan of the slightly darker quirky arts Happy

If the Midwest isn't responding to your "darker-side" crafts, you should market to the South. I live in the country. Everything around here is gingham, faux antique, and farm animals. Blech! People are beginning to crave stuff outside that box here. There are several stores in my town alone (and I live in a tiny town) that cater to that kind of craft. Even if the market isn't there at the moment, be patient. It'll come.
Oh, and cheers on the Carol Duvall reference. I learned how to emboss velvet from her..... Happy

I like cutesy stuff but not girlie cutesy. I too am a fan of fantasy and goth crafts, but the thing is when selling is that got reach a wide market of customers to find the ones who like what you make, which sucks cuz it's easier said than done, especially with etsy, dawanda and other online shops you have to advertise your shop yourself.
I know who Carol is too and Helene. LOL

I'm more into quirky more than cute. In fact I'm going to go one step further and come out of the closet here, please don't hate me for this Happy - I don't like hello kitty!!! I also don't like kawaii or very much of the anime stuff. I do like the stuff Alicia on here makes though - she does the crocheted safety cones but I suppose they are quirky cute rather than cutsey. I do however beleive in the rule that the exception proves the rule. Normally if there's a bat in a craft I don't care how tacky, cutsey, girly it is I want it ^*^ Probably my only girly girly taste is that I do like bright pink. It has to be bright though, not pastel and I like more punkier stuff.
I've just read this back and sound really high maintenance so I think I'd better stop here Happy You aren't alone though in not liking cutsey.

omg, the "cute" farm thing kept me away from crafting for two decades. seriously, it is still all you see in my hometown--thankfully, i moved away. also, i like to make things that will actually be USED.

i tend to lean toward retro (40s-60s, mostly), jewelry, and replicas. id rather have a replica of something from a movie, for example, than a shirt with the star's face on it. i hope that makes sense.

also, it almost *might* be easier to do "country"?

at least around here, you have quite a wide range of crafting techniques and styles. :-D

I'm with Michelle and Sheila, I do like the whole Kawaii thing, but that's probably the only cutesy thing I like, I LOVE Steampunk and some other quriky and darker things. My favourite style of art of craft is something pop art related. I <3 Pop Art, particularly Roy Litchenstein (sorry if it's spelt wrong, I could never spell it correctly and I can't be arsed to google it) I love how bold his stuff is, with bright colours and thick outlines. I only like comic books for their artistic perspective and that is all, but the style is what I feel is quirky and bold and daring and out there, even if it is retro - or whatever I don't care.

It depends on the type of people you come across on CO+K we all definatly have our own unique styles...

I like some of the kawaii stuff and the plushies. But I dont like the clouds and rainbows and the "too cute" stuff.Im not a girly type.
I dont know what kind of crafts I make...I mean I dont know how to label them.I dont think I have a certain style.I make what I like and need.Happy
But I have no problem with people ho like too cute stuff.HappyI love everyone here. Happy

Violetta you've pretty much nailed my point in fewer words than me - I tend to ramble. I prefer the animal Kawaii, someo the rainbows and clouds are ok, but the are a bit more O.T.T

I think as a whole the cutesy things just tend to be easier to make for most people. And everyone is right--it's having a boom in popularity at the moment. There's a lot of inspiration for them right now, and the craft stores have a much wider range of supplies for brightly colored, kawaii crafts. I guess I'm lucky that I like almost everything from cutesy rainbows to zombies and graveyards (just not the country stuff!) Don't worry though, people will get sick of it before too long. Everything's cyclical.

P.S. You're not the only one who remembers Carol Duvall. ;)
