Womens Hairdressers!

I'm not sure what the situation is in other countries but here in the UK if you are female and want to get your hair cut you are probably looking at paying a minimum of £30 (I live just outside London so it might be a bit less further North). If you are a man and pop along to your local Barber you could probably get roughly the same cut for less than a £10. How is this fair? I have very low maintenance hair these days and have been cutting it myself for the last 2 years as I just don't have the cash to pay someone £30 to spend 10 or 15 mins cutting an inch of the end of my hair and asking random questions about my holiday/plans for the weekend/weather......

I cut my own hair also, I can never find anyone who'll do it how I ask. I mean if I'm paying then I should get what I want right? Apparently it doesn't work like that in hairdresserland and they do what they want=/

haha- yea i hate going to get my hair cut because it is so expensive. here in the usa they have a lot of chain-store type of hair cutting places and they have deals for cuts and shampoo but i don't trust anyone that works at those places because they have high turn over. it would be like getting your hair done at wal-mart or something. i cut my own bangs and go in about once a year to get my dead ends cut off- if that. now that i am cutting my own bangs i might be brave enough to start cutting my ends too. i cut my husband and son's hair. after buying the clippers I think i have saved around $100 and it hasn't even been a year of doing that yet!

I get my hair trimmed, layered, thinned, and my fringe (bangs) cut for about £5 by a qualified hairdresser and im in northern ireland like, which is rather good compared to what some people have to pay unfortunately :l

I pay $110 for a cut and colour with my hairdresser...which is actually pretty decent. I have paid up to $180 for a haircut that I HATED, and I was sooo mad about. I generally go 3-6 months without a haircut and now I only trust one person with my hair, so for me its worth the 110.

yea i can totally see how paying $110 is worth it if you know you will be getting what you want from a great hairdresser! but unfortunately i have never found one i trusted so that's a lot to take a chance for me! Happy

I think it is all a case of trial and error. I used to pay $80 AUD for a trim, but through word of mouth I found this really good hairdresser who is salon trianed and qulified but now retired and just does it as a "pocket money" job on the side to keep her busy. She charges $9 AUD for a trim. I once had a trim, style, colour (base and foils) and a blow dry and it only came to $54.

Just keep trying and don't be afraid to ask people who's hair you like. You never know - you might just find that perfect little gem hiding in a corner somewhere.

I go to a chain hair salon and it costs me from $6 to $12. Although I dye my own hair or get a friend to if I want it colored. I used to have super long hair and I was told it would cost $135 to color it. So I'm not a huge fan of letting "pro's" touch my hair.

I'm with Jessica on this one. I have had the same hairdresser for 11 years and she has NEVER once messed my hair up.
When my husband left me, I couldn't afford to go and see her, so I let my hair grow out for 18 months. I went to see her 3 weeks ago and asked her to cut my VERY long hair (nearly waist length) to about my shoulders. She went a bit shorter than that but it looks lovely and I am sooo happy with it. But cut and blow dry cost me about £60 (expensive I know) but she is now the manager of the salon so I end up paying a premium for it. I do however colour my own hair as I prefer the semi permanent colours I can get in the shops to the harsh ones the hairdressers use.

Arty KitKat I think you ought to look around, you're in Hertfordshire right? Well I only live in Enfield, which is not far from you at all. I only pay £20 MAX for my hair to be cut. If I knew how to cut hair then I'd probably do it myself. Just look around.

Omg, I am literally TERRIFIED to go to anyone at all here in Israel. I mean, I'm used to top-of-the-line professional and organic haircare (I worked in an organic salon, with coworkers who trained at some of the best schools in the USA), and I'm just scared that anyone here that I can afford won't know how to work with my blonde, thin, Irish-German hair. I get it bleached a little lighter and then a toner, but you know, most people here have dark, curly, thick, and coarse hair, so what if they ruin my rather delicate strands with something they'd use on a Sephardic person? Time is running short, though, as I can't disguise my split ends with deep conditioner or olive oil anymore, nor my roots with interesting parts and styles. :-s

Any advise for me?

As far as pricing in other countries goes... if you are in the USA, try going to an Aveda school. The prices are much less expensive, and they are top-of-the-line schools, with great products. I know other schools have discounted services as well, and that *might* also be the case in other countries. I don't know for sure, but I think it's worth checking out. Happy

Oh Rachie thanks for reminding me, Arty Kit Kat, some colleges use people outside the college for models. I don't think it costs anything, the most it would cost would be the amount for the actual dye (to dye it) for just a cut they probably won't charge anything.
Just a thought, I know Enfield College does, they take on models for aromatherapy and all sorts, they might do the same at Southgate and Barnet college and any other colleges local to you. It's worth checking it out.

As for you Rachie I haven't got a clue what you could do. Do you go back to the USA to visit family? The only thing I can suggest is that you get your hair done when you go for visits.

Wow thats waay to much for a haircut!
I cut and color my own hair.(I dont have much cutting to do because of the dreads)so its much easier. But before I had the dreads done I cut it myself because I did it waay better then the hairdresser.^__^

In Serbia its much cheaper to get a haircut, because there are girls who finished the school for hairdresser, but they cant find a job so they work at home or come to your home.
My moms hairdresser comes to our house, she charges 2 euros for a haircut, coloring and washing, drying. So thats really cheap, and she does a much better work then in the salons.

Im planning to do the same in the summer.Im going to finish a 3 month class and cut hair at home, maybe open a salon later. But Im hoping to get a job in a salon because i know how to make dreads and thats really rare here.

Wow Nicholaxoo thats amazing - £5 is brilliant. Jessica your hair looks great so I can see that £110 is worth it as it looks quite a complicated style. Bec I'm impressed that you have found someone good for such a good price. I think part of the issue is that St Albans is pricy and a lot of the places are very salony. I used to go to somewhere that used to have a lot of older clients and they were less trendy but did just as good a job. Unfortunately they shut down ages ago Happy Unfortunately my local college doesn't do hairdressing, Watford does but after a day at work I'm shattered so its not really an option. I'm happy to stick with cutting my own hair but was just amazed that blokes seem to be able to get such a better deal. Maybe I need to draw on a beard and go to my local barbers Happy

is there some rule saying that you cant go to the barbers anyway? :-P

i think im just going to have to bite the bullet; there are a lot of russians here, so..... does anyone know if russians and i have the same type of hair???? (mine is thickish overall, but the strands themselves are thin..... and its a darkish blonde color. a teensy bit of a wave, but mostly straight.)
