People bringing down creativity?

Not too long ago I thought that taking up crafts in my spare time would be a good and fun hobby. Hardly ever find anything I really want in the stores. And when I do find something cool they're usually at a ridiculously high price. For example: a cute, small liquid bottle necklace with glitter inside. Price? $28. Wtf?! And yes it was in America. Happy

But that's not my main rant. Learning how to sew/knit/bead isn't at all a bad thing to learn. Plus I could make a couple bucks off of it. But for some reason my mother is against it. It's absolutely ridiculous. By no means is she forcing me not to, but she constantly makes little snide comments about it being "cheap". Plus she keeps telling me, "Just go buy something in the store. Stuff like that it stupid."

I'm not mad or annoyed, just curious as to what's up with my mom. FYI, she's not a bad mom by any means. Overall, nice. Just a bit snobby.

I believe it's just her snobby attitude acting up. I caught her at night looking at bracelets I made. lol

I thought this was just a funny thing I had to talk about. So, how about you? Anyone actually trying to bring you down about the stuff you make?

People do think it's a bit odd until they actually see the finished things you made and then they are like "woah, you made that?" My mum was ok with me making stuff when I was a kid because we didn't have money to buy it and also her mum was super ace at knitting and dressmaking (my mum would have glued buttons on if she could lol).
Show your mum how much money there is to made in handmade stuff, that might win her over lol

It would annoy me just a bit to hear someone telling me that I guess just because I have a passion for crafting, so that's just me, but I agree with Laurel, so if she was eyeing your stuff with some kind of admiration then she may think differently. Also explain to her that some people would rather have a handmade gift than something bought because of the thought and care put into it and this I have actually heard people say. I mean if you even care to go that far with getting your mom see it's not a bad thing, but if it is just a snobby attitude then you would probably be wasting your time. But we here would love to see what you've made, so don't be shy with us!!

I think it depends on the person, some people look down on it, and some don't. and some people act like that because they wish the could do something like that

My boyfriend was a bit embarressed at first when I started sewing and knitting because it's considered a bit old fashioned. And he doesn't know anybody else who does it and he's very aware of what people are thinking of him. But then I got so many nice reactions from people so now he's good.

So far I've only made drawings and such of bracelets I've planned to make from beads I've seen. Forgot to say that in the beginning. XD

I think my mother is a closet fan of crafts. She's stopped picking at me about wanting to learn about them. But I think her pride won't allow her to ask me to make her something after she said stuff like that. For some reason she won't stop looking at the plans I've made for jewelry. A ninja she is not. lol

Can't wait to learn and start posting things up here. I'm very critical about myself so it'll probably be awhile before I post anything. Tongue

I enjoy homemade things myself. As much as I like cool things in the store it's a nice change to receive something so sweet.

Once I get really good I do plan to sell stuff. There's an arts and crafts event every weekend where I live during the spring. By the way is it illegal to buy beads from a store, make it into something, then sell it?

No it's not illegal to do that. The stores provides supplies that you need to make things to sell (or not), nor is it illegal to buy beads or anything else from another source for making and selling.

I hear what you're saying about sewing and knitting being viewed as old fashioned but then I always tell people with that view "Vivienne Westwood and other top designers didn't get where they were today without learning those skills!"

@Laurel: Agreed. It's hilarious how she's acting though. XD

There was a sign up sheet for lessons at a craft store nearby. The people who were signing up were all either late into their middle ages or elderly. And the one in charge of the sign up sheet actually asked me why I wanted to learn. "You're not old yet." lol

Haha Michelle! That would be so funny.

Yeah I get mixed reactions about it. A lot of the time, people are really excited that I do crafts - when people see a blue-haired girl with a nose piercing and huge Doc Martens and then notice I'm knitting or embroidering, they just get really interested and ask me about it. I always do crafts on long journeys to keep me occupied, and I always get people asking me what I'm doing, what my next project is etc. And I know my friends like that I do that stuff, and none of them make fun of me really. But I do get a lot of "Couldn't you just buy that in the shop?" and I have to explain that either it's cheaper to make it (if it is, not always haha) or that while it's more expensive, it's comforting for me to do, relaxing and people appreciate home made gifts more. My friends always laugh at me though if I go to like a craft fair or something and refuse to buy anything because I know I could make it for much cheaper. Even if I'm not actually going to make it, just knowing that I COULD makes me leave it haha. But yeah, it's the kind of thing you need to fight through. There is a weird stigma that crafting is for old people, but just come on this forum and you can see the amount of teenagers and young adults doing their own thing =) I think it's beautiful.

I need to watch that movie. Loved the preview but never actually went to see it. Tongue

My main reason for starting to learn this is not just because I think it's fun but because a lot of the jewelry/dolls I like are at a ridiculously high price because they're usually imported from asia. Who sells a simple origami tile necklace for $20? And it didn't even have other beads on it. Just that one tile and obviously used paper. And I am a big fan of amigurumi dolls. Don't see it a lot despite living in a place with tons of stores.

This Christmas and following holidays I plan to just carry around a big basket of hand made crafts and just give them to random people. Happy

Oh, and I was hoping someone could answer me this question. If I wanted to sell my crafts at a craft fair and one of the rules says that the stuff has to be 75% handmade, what does that mean?

...my first thought is that they mean 75% of what you sell has to be handmade, as in you can sell some stuff which isn't but it mostly has to be. That seems the most sensible to me.
