Skulls, why?
ARGH THIS MAKES ME SO MAD...
Omg sorry I don't understand your whole problem with skulls...>_<
I wear skulls scince I was 5 years old...just becouse I love the shapes and think they are cute...
I still wear them but you have loads of diffrent skulls...
cute skulls;
real-ish skulls;
It's just what you like...
And I'm sorry that I say this 2 you while I'm a kid...I guess loads of Little children all know that that thing is a part of our body and that it isn't morbid.
Sorry for my bad English
I think Shyro, it's just a matter of taste, and you shouldn't be mad about it.
Yes but it's always...SKULLS ARE MORBID SKULLS ARE SATANISTIC SKULLS ARE THE SYMBOLS OF DEAD...And I hate it if people think that way of parts of theyr body...
she didn't say that though, it sounded more like she doesn't like the actual image rather then any sort of metaphor behind them, she was just wondering why people liked and used them.
Violinagin - I think it's 'remember you are mortal' or something?
I don't like ripped jeans, they make me cold. How can you not know who the Beatles are...everyone knows vaguely who they are surely! One of those bands you know the names of but can't remember learning to names, and you know the songs. There were ace girl's beatles t-shirts in the tour shop but I didn't have 20 quid.
I don't believe she said that. She said she doesn't like them on children's clothes, which I think is fair enough. She didn't say anything about Satanism.
And come on, we can't get into people hating parts of their bodies! You wouldn't have a tshirt with a vagina on it (well, maybe you would), and that's just a part of your body.
theyre a part of you. they dont necessarily represent death. its like people saying blood is gross.
Wikipedia FTW: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase that may be translated as "Remember that you are mortal," "Remember you will die," "Remember that you must die," or "Remember your death". It names a genre of artistic creations that vary widely from one another, but which all share the same purpose, which is to remind people of their own mortality."
I shoulda just called my boyfriend though and gotten him to conjugate it. It's denotation is fairly obvious, I'm just still wondering about connotation. At least in the original, deadness of the language. Eh, I'm thinking about this too hard. Life's too short (couldn't help it, I've just got to play with language!)
As a worker in a doctors office, blood is perhaps the least gross thing we have to work with. Still don't want someone else's blood all over me. I think the problem comes as far as the image of a skull goes that for the longest time to actually see a skull, death at some point was involved. Or to see blood there was usually a wound or pain and that could lead to death as well. It's a very ingrained response to associate skulls with death. And some people don't like death.
I think Andy Warhol would think it was a great joke and enjoy it. But he was fairly odd like that. I'm more curious about what Lichtenstein would think about being lumped in there with him so much that most /artists/ I know can't tell them apart. Which is surprising to me. But I spent most of art school banging my head against a wall anyway.
Don't know beans about the Beatles though. Couldn't tell you one of their songs or pick them out of a line up. I will say I've heard some of their music and I did not like it.
Blood IS gross. I really, really hate blood. But I kinda hate anything to do with bodies. I hate seeing internal organs, I hate knowing that I have blood going through my veins, I hate thinking about the millions of things that could go wrong in my body, how fleshy and disgusting my brain is, etc etc. Bodies are disgusting. Aaaaanyway
well half of them have died...so you could only get to pick out too...hey look death >skulls...
Warhol painted the soup can as like a statement on consumerism didn't he? It's ironic that his work is on fashion items...he would have probably liked it. That's odd with the Lichtenstein thing, very different to Warhol work in my opinion. Speaking of art Memento Mori popped up quite a lot:
http://journablog.blogspot.com/2008/02/memento-mori.html this blog shows some, I can't remember the name of the artist whose painting I was shown in college but I think it was that second picture I was shown, vicars would have skulls on their desks to remind them of the meaning.
Actually, speaking of skulls, you know what it awesome? Damien Hirst's diamond-encrusted skull is incredible. For those who haven't seen,
I also just read what he said about it, which I love
'I just want to celebrate life by saying to hell with death,' said the artist, 'What better way of saying that than by taking the ultimate symbol of death and covering it in the ultimate symbol of luxury, desire and decadence? The only part of the original skull that will remain will be the teeth. You need that grotesque element for it to work as a piece of art. God is in the details and all that.'
Why, though, is he doing it? 'I've always adhered to the principle that the simplest ideas are the best, and this will be the ultimate two fingers up to death. I want people to see it and be astounded. I want them to gasp.' But what if it turns out to be more bling than breathtaking? 'If it's vulgar, I'll put it on a chain and hang it round my neck - or I'll stick it on the mantelpiece.'
I see that and just think 'Mmm...50 million...'. I was wondering about the teeth though too and can see his point. The position of the skull's jaw makes it have a really funny expression. I've never understood the nose part of skulls, there's just a hole but i can feel bone all the way through my nose!
Noses are terrifying too! Apparently if you hit them from underneath hard enough, you can quite easily push a bone into your brain and die. Brilliant. And they break so easily.
I have a t-shirt from urban outfitters actually, that has a skull filled with images of white roses I don't go out of my way to buy skull items, but if I like it I will buy it regardless. I think I only have that one t-shirt and a belt with skulls on that I no longer wear.
I like Damien's reason for making the skull, but I think it looks gaudy!
Haha fair enough. I might be going to the university that he went to! Along with Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren.
How did he get into Uni? He only got an E in his art a level apparently...mind you I know people who got into uni without top grades.
