Fishnets, To Wear, or Not To Wear, That IS The Question.....

I love them with skirts and dresses but don't think they look right with shorts but everyone has their own preferences and I don't think that you should change yours to better suit others ideals of "fashion" "style" or "suitability"

Well, high heeled shoes were originally worn as lingerie in the bedroom, and look how widely worn The way I see it, the taboo of fishnets is also going away. I mean, they're already being sold by a lot more clothing websites, and used much more widely as an accessory.
Especially this fall, because hardcore punk is so ontrend.
Also, if I saw you in fishnets and a Slipknot tee on the street, I would just say you were awesome and have great taste in music. Just gotta say it. Happy

@Monika, thanks for the table of what you wear them with, I am always trying to figure out ways to incorporate cute leggings, tights and thigh highs with outfits. For instance, I bought a super cute vintage plaid dress that snaps up on etsy, and bought some skull rhinestone topped black thigh highs at hot topic, and when you put them together, I think it looks super cute with a black jacket and combat boots. *attaching a pic*
I am new to wearing tights, stockings and fishnets, but have always loved the look, so I will take the ideas you ladies have given me and use them to work on my wardrobe.
What do you think the best sizing is? I bought a pair from walmart for my height and weight and it seems they are hard to stretch to the crotch area.......like they are lower.........haha.

@supernova's child, thanks! that means a lot. But yeah, I do believe fishnets are a taboo to a lot of people still. Especially older ladies, they seem to dislike them the most, but in general I think they bring looks, and I am working on trying to ignore that.

But seriously, I appreciate everyone's feedback on this subject Happy

For tights and panty hose, I usually buy one or two sizes larger than it says to, because that way they will fit more like leggings around the hips. The "one size" tights usually fit the 100-160 pound range for people that are 5'2 to 5'6, and even though I'm heavier than 160, I can usually wear them without issue. But for the tights with sizes, I can usually fit into a Medium or Large if I have to, but I prefer to get the plus size tights so they're looser at the hip and the material is thicker around my legs... the bigger sizes are sometimes harder to scratch holes into by accident as well.

I've found that Icing usually has cool tights. The microfiber tights are warm and comfy!

I'll have to check out Hot Topic, I've been wanting a corset for a while but I feel like I should try one on before I buy it. I might just make my own.

My DrMarten combat boots are my FAVorite clothing i own! lol idk how i lived without them. HotTopic clearance?! damn i wish i lived closer to a mall...i miss all the good deals.
btw, my first pic im wearin 2 pairs stockings. One big hole fishnets from hottopic, the other is just a cheap pair from walmart i ripped holes in. I wear the same outfits year-round, i just wear warm leggings instead of stockings...i think leggings are warmer then pants.
@Monika : I stocked up on halloween stockings at walmart last year too. lol these awesome red/black tydye ones.

I think that as you get older and more mature, the fishnets can still be worn, but in more of a "show girl" way. When I'm doing things for theater we wear a pair of nude stockings and then a pair of nude fishnets over, it gives your leg definition and when someone actually takes the time to look at your ensemble they pop all over again. When I was in high school I would wear fishnets during summer, and when it got cold I would put on a pair of bright tights underneath so that my fishnets still showed but I was warm and the stood out. Wear them loud, wear them proud!

If you are having a bit of anxiety toward the issue, try wearing fishnets that are closer to your skin color (if your legs are pale, white or nude; if they're tanned or dark, a darker tan or brown;) and work up to wearing colors that pop more as you get comfortable! =)

Monika, maybe some people like wearing solid tights under shorts? Just because it's not sexy or daring, doesn't automatically make it childish. I'm not comfortable showing my legs, but I like wearing shorts because I like the way they look on me. Why on the one hand praise those who want to wear fishnets with shorts in a sort of power-to-you, wear-what-you-want stance, but then bash those who wear tights with them?

I stand by what I said. You can take it or leave it.
To me, it does look childish, because what do most moms do if they want to put their young daughters in short shorts? They add leggings. On someone who's an adult, I think leggings with shorts look tacky.
Leggings, in my opinion, are something you wear with a tunic, skirt, or dress.

And it really isn't bashing, just an expression of distaste and a judgment of a style.

I've learned over the years wear what you want. People are going to stare no matter what. If you like them and you feel comfortable in them wear them. Its not their choice or our choice if you should wear them or not.
