Omaha, Nebraska questions

So, my husband and I have a choice to re-locate to Offutt AFB near Omaha, however............we both don't really want to, BUT we hate it here in NC a lot.

So, I have a ton of questions if anyone lives there or near Offutt AFB.

If you do, pm me please. Happy

thanks!

I have only been to Omaha for a museum trip. It isn't a bad place and there's a lot of good food to be had there. The Midwest as a whole is a really awesome region to live in. The only city I don't really like is Lincoln because the drivers are fast and dangerous and there's nothing to do there. Lol

Yeah, I am curious about the tornadoes there, haha. My husband is a meteorologist in the Air Force, and that makes me feel safe, buttttttttttt I don't want a tornado eating our home, or something, haha. I love snow, so the brutal winters seem calming to me. Happy The city itself has a HUGE interest to me. I am a vet tech, so working at the zoo with the animals or a certain animal would be great. I saw a listing like months ago about them needing a nursery worker for the baby animals! I was like, omfg, yes! haha I would love that. Given though, that some of the little babies are sick and need medical care, but still! baby animals! Happy I would love to work at the zoo, and the afb is only like 10 miles to omaha, sooooooooo it would be feasible, if I could get into a position.

Where is lincoln?

Did you go around the city at all like, is it artsy? cool stores? I like cities that have the nice shops and vintage places and coffee shops. hehe but minus tornadoes.

Most tornadoes that far north aren't very strong. We get tornadoes in my region and they rarely do more than blow off a few shingles and rustle the cornfields.

There are lots of neat stores. I went on a Sunday so not much was open, but there are all sorts of artsy shops. The art industry as a whole is huge there because there's the Bemis Center AND the Joslyn museum.

Lincoln is about an hour west of Omaha. I don't recommend going there. lol

But hey, Omaha is like a 2 and a half hour drive away from where I live in South Dakota, so if you move there, we can meet up for a day at the museum or something!

yeah I told Jake that he should look into the climatology of that area, haha.
I do love snow though, and the biggest complaint that I am finding for that area, are the brutal winters.

I ordered a visitor's guide book, but it didn't help so much on what there is to do outdoorsy wise.

yeah I want to stay away from lincoln it sounds like.

haha that sounds cool. Happy

The winters are actually quite pleasant when you dress for them. A good pair of fur-lined waterproof boots, a warm coat, and warm hat will all go a long way. I have what my PA friends call the "Fargo" hat. Here's an old pic of it from a few years ago. I need to get a picture of the hat on its own.

It's a basic fuzzy hat that's really easy to make. I actually made tons of them last winter so if you need one I can mail one to you. lol

yeah, the boots would be a great idea, I don't own any of those. I have a wool peacoat, like boondock saints style. Haha the fargo hat! it looks warm! I may need one of those! haha

It is VERY warm. I can go outside when it's 60 below freezing and feel just fine with that hat on.

Oh, and wool coats are the best. Sometimes it gets cold enough here though that you need a wool coat with a leather coat on top. The leather will block out the wind so the wool can keep heat in better. That's usually only necessary when it's super windy though.
I just got a green wool jacket from Talbots that's super comfy... I'm going to be wearing it with a scarf and my Fargo Hat all winter Happy

haha, ok SOLD, I want one now! Happy
oh man, I found some super cute winter boots at walmart. I typically don't buy walmart shoes, because in the past they just fell apart, but these were black, with the shiny bottom, nice insulation and the top had a little red plaid peeking out. I didn't get them, because we won't know about Nebraska until December, but now I am thinking, what if I don't get them, and then they sell out in my size.........and then I can't find them. haha You know what I mean?

Tom an I moved to Omaha briefly last year and loved it soooooo much, we'd go back in a second. Feel free to send me any questions you have and I can show you photos and give you recommendations. Also PinkWeeds lives there and she's awesome!

We had a great time in Omaha! Really, *really* friendly people, the Old Market / Downtown area is really nice. It's not the biggest or most exciting place though - but maybe not in a bad way.

Yea, I was going to say I live in Omaha and Cat and Tom lived here last year. Tornados don't generally hit the city- it happens occasionally but not often. Mostly we just get bad lighting and wind storms with hail. But home insurance here always covers that stuff. Lincoln is about an hour from Omaha and it's not really worth the trip- it's not much of a city compared to Omaha which is actually the larger of the two cities. Winters can suck but the past few winters here have been pretty mild with little snow fall. We do get blizzards but Omaha is so used to bad weather that they have tons of back up plans in place for when things get bad so most people are only out a day of work while the roads are cleared before its safe to travel again. Offut is in Bellvue which is a pretty safe city as far as crime goes. OH and the zoo is #1 in the whole country so it's really amazing. I haven't gone to too many other zoos around the country, but I hear that most other zoos are sad places in comparison because the animals are all in cages.

But feel free to message me with any questions, I’ve lived in Omaha my whole life and it’s a great place to live.

I think we're going to need a CO+K meetup in Omaha some day! It's the closest large city to where I go to school and it makes for a nice day-long city trip. Happy
