If you are into embroidery I'd recommend 'doodle stitching', it gave me loads of ideas when I first started and I loved the little plushies she makes. Although its probably a bit basic if you any thing other than a beginner.

I've got a crochet book for you too- I love crochet by Rachel Henderson & Sarah Hazell. Its good if you're a beginner like me. I don't know if you're from the UK or US, but its a UK book so all the terms are UK. It has a lot of quite varied small projects that would make great gifts and everythings pretty modern, no crochet square waistcoats that even your granny wouldn't wear.

Have a look in works (the stationary shop), they often have quite cheap craft books, (I got the love crochet book in there for £2.99 in the summer).

Depending on what your local library is like, they can also be a good source of craft books. Its particularly good as it allows you to see exactly what projects are included before you buy (unlike amazon) so you don't buy the book then discover theres nothing in it you actually want to make.
