Wedding Cake Toppers

As some of you know, I'm divorced and getting remarried, in August. My first wedding leaned more toward the traditional, but since getting engaged to my wonderful best friend of 12 years, I discovered a wonderful thing... offbeatbride.com
It's this entire site dedicated to weirdos and nerds(like me) and rockers, having exactly the offbeat weddings they want!!
I'm a little obsessed with the site(just a little, I promise), and I get new ideas and inspirations all the time. One thing is, non-traditional wedding cake toppers. As in, not the perfect skinny couple, making goo-goo eyes at each other, or staring blankly off into space. That's not what Daniel and I look like. I'm sorta goofy looking, I wear glasses, have short almost black hair, 'full-figured'(fiance forbade me from calling myself fat)...He's a big guy. Looks and personality wise, he's sort of a combo of Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and Drew Carey. He's freckled and dark-blond, wears Drew Careyesque black rectangle plastic glasses, is a big nerd, too... I also think it'd be cool to make a representative of my daughter, since she's sorta marrying us too. (Or so she declares)
Anyway, I want to come up with a crafty-cool topper for us, which represents more of who WE are, and not just THAT we are a hetero couple getting married. I would LOVE some input on this!!
Here are some helpful hints (from Heather, not Heloise):
I'm a booknerd, artist(no doy), mom, cook, writer, movie junkie...many other things too, but that's good for now.
He's a reader as well, and also a gamer, writer, movie geek, musician/music geek, loves gummy bears & twizzlers.

Our wedding colors are light greens and dark purples, my dress is tea-length and sort of fairy-like, with an uneven hem. Our theme is sort of laid back, everyone's going to be in flip-flops, guys in khakis and girls in sundresses. We're getting married in a state park.

Another idea I had, is to use action figures or toys of things we both love. Like Casey Jones and April O'Neill from Ninja Turtles(even though they look nothing like us), or Link and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda(yes this is the fiance who has a triforce tattooed on his wrist.) Maybe something funny and opposite, like a G.I. Joe and a My Little Pony. Maybe that's gross? XD

Anyway, holler at me if you have any ideas, no matter how far-fetched or 'stupid' they seem to you. I really would love to read your feedback!!!

Thanks,
XOXOXO Heather AKA SparrowFae

Hey Heather!Congrats on the wedding! And also thank you for the link to the site!My very good friends are getting married in may and they need some good "not so traditional" ideas!

About the cake toppers, maybe you could buy marzipan and make the cake topper yourself. Its not hard at all,I made some animals and stuff years ago.Color it with food coloring,or maybe you can get the colored ones. Its the same as working with Fimo.So that way you could make them the way you like and the way you look.Happy
Hope I helped I hate those "perfect couple" cake toppers too... Happy

My girlfriend got married last year and they had a couple on a motocycle on thier cake, it was cute! She was playing with the idea of the one with the bride dragging the groom by the collar! Happy
What about having your girl draw a picture of you guys as a family, one of you, your fiance and her! then put them on card stock and stick a bamboo stick to the back and insert into cake! That way she is making something very special for you guys and you can alway take off the bamboo and keep them as a momento! I'm thinking everyone will love the fact that she made something so special for the wedding that everyone can see! Happy
Either that or put all sorts of action figures all over the cake! If you are having layers put them all over! if your family and friends know you at all then they will love it, and know it is what you wanted not just something out of "the knot" (barf)
Hope my ideas help, and thank you for the wedding site, I am working with my friend as a wedding photographer, so it's always good to know of sites that don't follow tradition...and I love stuff like that too so I'm sure I'll be on there looking!!!!
Good luck sweety...
p.s. do you need a photographer???? LOL

Those are great ideas!! I'm not too good with polymer clay, so I doubt I'd do any better with marzipan...but it was a lovely idea!
I LOVE the idea of Sofi drawing us, that would be cool! BTW, very funny, you wouldn't want to come all the way to Tennessee to shoot our wedding, you'd be disappointed, LOL. My fiance is a freelance photographer, though, and he's having his partner take the pictures.

We changed our theme! I know...crazy. But we went to the park we want to have it at, and looked at this GORGEOUS building(they call it a lodge) in which to have it. It's rustic and old. The outside is rock, and inside, it looks kind of medieval! So, instead of a picnic wedding, we're going to have a Renaissance inspired fairytale wedding. In which a mere mortal man marries....a fairy....XD Kinda out there, I know, but it's really us. We're both obsessed with fantasy(Wheel of Time, LotR, Legend of Zelda), and our nearby RenFest, which is actually coming up in May. So...I may very well be picking out a pair of wings this year, instead of just eating a turkey leg and watching the shows!

LOL that's great!!!! My friend got married about 4 years ago did exactly that! they got married by a Wiccan High Priestess, all the guys were dressed as pirates and the girls in medieval garb! Both her and I had on hand-made dresses( I was the maid of honor)! They jumped the broom as part of the ceremony also! Their wedding cake was a large pirate ship which the cut with the sword used in the ceremony, it was all around a very cool day! I will add some pictures Happy

Hope it will give you some inspiration!

That's so cool! More and more, people are having geeky/fantasy weddings. My family's going to be a little perturbed, but my first wedding was mostly traditional, so they can just shove it. I love the pirate ship cake!!!

Friends of mine had a Stonehenge cake, it was great, but I don't suppose that would be the thing in USA?

How about having the cake like a mediaeval castle, with a little figure the image of you at one window, or at the top , your daughter peeking out from another window, and your fiance swimming across the moat???

i like the idea of your daughter making the topper- that would be very special.

have you ever seen a tree stump cake? i almost had one for my wedding but it didn't fit my theme. here is a link to a picture but if you google tree cake you can find lots of pictures for some cool tree stump cakes. i just think it would be easy to dress it up for fantasy themed wedding

you should have a minstrel! that would be sooooo cool. and a good way to entertain your guests too. and how fun would it be to have a medieval pig roasting or something like that

XD those are some awesome ideas!! We're on a super tight budget, so it's going to be very...rustic. This is a link to the inspiration for the wedding cake, or cakes, depending... http://offbeatbride.com/2008/03/fruit-flower-cakes For the groom's cake, we're doing a cheesecake(or cheesecakes), possibly with a Tri-force design on top. I'm considering making the tri-force from dyed white chocolate. An idea I had, which my FH thought was pretty cute, was for Link and Zelda to be on separate cakes, like she's trapped, or in a castle or whatever, and he's trying to reach her...cuz that's totally how the games are...except Twilight Princess anyway...
We really want to have RenFaire style turkey legs on the buffet, LOL. We LOVE RenFest!! Daniel used to be the photographer for the TN Renfest.

That stump cake is so cute!!! I actually love the idea of a Stone Henge cake(brings a funny Eddie Izzard joke to mind), Nora! I'm obsessed with all things Celtic, Scottish, Irish, English, Welsh...Thinking of getting my name(Heather) tattooed on my wrist in Gaelic. It's not very pretty, but it's still special! Here's an awesome website that's inspired me to make some accessories for myself and my bridesmaids/faery handmaidens....This page is for the gauntlets, but to the left, there are links to more items, like gorgeous wings(way too expensive for me), and nifty faery crowns, which I want to make.
