This website is quite quick and simple for sewing machine trouble: http://sewandserge.com/tshoot.asp

For me the usual thing that works for most problems is to take the bottom bobbin out, give it a good wiggle/shake and re-thread the bobbin. Seems silly but it works for me.

If you have a Singer machine, try rethreading the entire machine and testing it on a normal weight fabric like quilter's cotton. If it's still not working, leave it alone for a day or two and come back to it.

Make sure that both threads are on the top plate before you introduce the fabric.

Try changing the needle.

ARGH I had exactly the same thing...it's called Hook Timing Fix and here's a video on how to fix it...my dad spent forever fixing it, but in the end we bought a new machine for my birthday + Christmas present this year
