Can anyone recommended a sewing machine?

hey,
i'm looking to buy a new sewing machine since my old one is completely dead, really should bury it or something. anyway in my town there is only one shop that sells machines and they only have 4 to offer... and i can't find any reviews online for these models. hence i don't want to buy one just to find it is rubbish.

so does anyone have any recommendations for sewing machines?
i'd say my sewing skills are intermediate, i've a good knowledge of my way around a sewing machine, but definately not expert at it.

any recommendations?
any would be much appreciated.
*high five*

wish i could help, every machine i have ever gotten i have worked into the ground. i have been thinking of getting an industrial one just because of that, one with all metal parts. come to think of it, the only machine i didn't kill was the "golden" touch and sew by singer my folks had while i was growing up.

I don't have much experience with sewing machines. I got mine about 6 months ago. It's a Toyota 21DES RS2000, not an expensive one but it's worked fine so far. It doesn't have many features though, just a few decorative stitches.

IF you're going for a used one, get an older metal one.. nothing plastic.. SOmething like a Sewline or Bermeda ( I think they were called).

I've had a Husquvarna that was fab.. it ran forever. My janome is a trooper though My old Sewline goes through ANYTHING.
My best friend had an old Singer.. like I said.. those older ones just are fantastic.

What kinda stuff are you planning on sewing up? You looking for an old and new one?

i'm not entirely sure, i've always thought old ones are more reliable and trustworthy but new ones... well newer ones have more fancy things which i don't really need but would like, tehe... a machine capable of doing one step button holes would be great since i always some how mess them up.

i just need it for customising and sewing 'new' from old.

If you got the cash to splurge go get a new one, they come with warranties and sometimes fancy smancy stitches are fun.. but only if you're really into decorative stitch.

Personally sounds like just an good older machine will do your job. Hunt around at Salvation Army or old thirft shops. I noticed you're from the UK. Sometimes Aldi, Netto or Lidl get in cheap machines that do the job. I've got one of those too. ( bit of a machine hog ) called a queen, which is a plastic machine, but it does the job. If you're going to attack denim jeans and heavier materials I wouldn't go for one of these.

Hope this helps....
