My go to favorite is Caron Simply Soft. Its a worsted but I think its a little thinner than most. But I really like the way it feels and I've used it to make baby blankets for my sisters kids when she was expecting, and the blankets are still really soft, after 4 and 2 years of washing. So that's a great find. They are a little bit more expensive for a big chain brand and the skeins are less yardage. I think its worth it though. Geek

I love Heartland USA. It's so soft and warm, and there's a great selection of jewel tones, which I tend to favor over bright or pastel colors. It also works pretty well as doll hair. It gets a little fuzzy after a while, but it's so soft and sturdy I don't mind having to de-fuzz once in a while.

I like Wool-Ease Thick'n'Quick for anything that needs to be warm. I always used to think that wool = itchy, but I've found Wool-Ease yarns to be very soft, even for scarves that sit on bare skin.

There's another one that I love, I think it's called Homespun? It's a textured, variegated yarn that comes in gorgeous colors and is the softest yarn I've ever touched. It also gets a tiny bit fuzzy over time, and it can be hard to work with since there's a thin gathering thread throughout the middle of the strand that breaks if you pull the yarn too tightly, but I found it easy to get used to and totally worth a little frustration in the beginning. Plus, they have I think 4 or 5 different shades of purple, which is always a plus imo!

Yeah they homespun is what I recommend for beginners (I teach classes) who are wanting to use eyelash (because nothing will make you hate crochet/knitting more than having to frog eyelash as a beginner). Its good stuff!

I have a matching hat and scarf that I made with it years ago that are still the softest, warmest things in my closet. My favorite is the purple and black one, I want to say it's called Amethyst? My craft & fabric stores only stock it a couple times a year for some reason, so I always try to buy it when I see it! I never learned to do anything more fancy than a straight line (or a tube on a circular loom) so I'm definitely still in that beginner category, but the Homespun hides so many mistakes you'd never know it!
